Adaptive headlights high beam stuck on
Hi. I recently bought a 2012 F30 328i M Sport which has Adaptive Headlights and High Beam Assist. I've been having a problem where the passenger side headlight will get stuck in the up position even when the high beam is turned off (either manually or when the High Beam Assist does it).
I've discovered that if I pull over and hit the headlight with my fist, the light does gradually drop back down, so presumably the motor which aims the light is sticking. (The bi xenon shutter seems to be operating OK as I can hear it clicking). Has anyone else experienced this and is it fixable myself or will I need a complete new headlight unit? So it turned out it was the bi-xenon shutter sticking and I managed to fix it. I'm posting the solution here so others can find it.
I removed the wheel and the headlight bulb as as described in this post: F30 HID Xenon Bulb Replacement DIY In the photo below you can see the solenoid that actuates the shutter (red circle #1). If you push on this you can make the shutter (yellow area #3 inside the projector) move up and down manually. It was sticking in when I let it go so I blocked the hole where the bulb goes with a rag and sprayed some WD40 on the solenoid as well as on the two metal arms either side (green bars #2). I pushed on the solenoid a load of times to spread the oil and this freed up the mechanism completely. I then repeated this on the other headlight as that was becoming a bit sticky too. Hope this helps anyone who has the same problem. Keywords for search engines: BMW F30 bi-xenon xenon headlight shutter not working stuck on up problem |
