Polished and Coated

The M40i is ready for the elements. My wife wants to have paint protection film put on the front of the car. I hope she has money laying around somewhere.

Looks great, KAP8 - thanks for sharing. Did you debadge with dental floss or did a detail team handle?

It was a 9 hour process in total.

1. Wash the car with Gyeon Bathe+ (2 buckets).
2. Polish the car with Sonax Perfect Finish using a Rupes Yellow pad on the Porter Cable 7424 random orbit polisher.
3. Remove Polish
4. Wipe entire vehicle with Gyeon Prep to ensure all polish/oils are removed.
5. Apply Kamikaze Miyabi coat.
6. Wait at least 2 hours and apply Kamikaze ISM coat.

I enjoy detailing. I use the same procedure on my F32.

I notice that you have a couple of white BMW's. My 3 series Touring and 335 GT were both Alpine White. I really like the colour.

What I do not like is the rust spots. Don't get me wrong, this is not the car rusting. It is small iron flakes from brakes, passing trains and general environmental particles. If I stay on top of them, I can polish them off. I have even had them on parts that are plastic, like bumpers.

I have not seen them other paint colours, including my 2004 silver Z4.

When I picked up the GT the dealer warned me (as he was trying to upsell).

Do you have a problem with the spots in Virginia?

Those orange spots are iron deposits. I use Gyeon Q2M Iron to easily remove them. Having said that. My F32 has not had one single iron deposit since I coated the vehicle in late May. I'm thinking that the Kamikaze must repel them. Something has changed. Prior to applying the Kamikaze, I had iron deposits.

I wash my car every Saturday, and stare closely at it. So when I say it has no iron deposits, it literally has none!!

Detail and polish looks great. I am eager to to try out my Kamikaze products when they arrive in a couple days. Trying to not drive my m40i to much before i can properly get it sealed and detailed up.

You'll love Kamikaze, Gyeon and everything else that Todd sells.

He and DJ Mayo are the top detailers in the country. Rich guys fly them all over the country to correct the paint on fleets of Ferrari's. I buy all my products from Esoteric.

Thanks! It hasn't moved in a week. My wife says it is too nice to drive, so she is driving her Honda Civic.

The ceramic glass coating will have scratches eventually. How do you polish the coating?

Once you a polish a coating, you will have to reapply it since polish is an abrasive, which will remove the coating. You can avoid scratches if you are using proper washing/drying technique.

Just thinking this through, as I see it, the finish that is applied is a slow drying, very hard and very thin top coat. So once you cut through the top coat, you need to repair it by reapplying. That would require going through the original process of cleaning and perhaps additional prep for the areas that still have some of the cured top coat.

I suspect that it may not be very tolerant of normal wax either.

Anyone have experience in doing repairs? Also what happens when (hopefully never) a respray is required?

I suspect the repair is not easy. The problem is the glass coating is a lot harder and durable compare to the original factory clear coat. Polishing clear coat can easily remove imperfection and scratches but it is not the case on the ceramic coating. It requires a lot more abrasive method to remove it completely before reapplying it. I do traditional claying, DA polishing and sealant periodically to "Reset" my paint condition and I am not sure how easy can it be done on a ceramic coated paint.

Spot repairs can be done if you need to compound/polish a scratch, you are correct that you would have to do prep again in order to remove all surface contaminants before correction. When you reapply the coating I would do a slight overlap to areas that still have the coating to guarantee you are covering any unprotected paint. CarPro makes a coating repair product called Essence Plus but I have no experience with it.

Most coatings tend to have a self cleaning effect that will shed any top coat placed on top like a wax. Putting wax on bare paint may last a few months where as placing wax on a coating will only last a few weeks.

As for respraying a body panel, you will want to wait for the paint to gas out and fully cure before applying any wax/sealant/coating/film
