Best setting on Wireless Router

My router is stupid as hell....I don't know how but I'll be in the next room over from the router and the speed will randomly go from 2mps-54, it just never stay constant. I've been messing with the settings and it has seemed to get fater but honestly I'm just changing burst speed and output numbers as well as frequency changes. Does anyone have any good configs for the following router??

Also what's the difference between B and G? I know is used most of the time but I'm hoping someone could tell me. Yes, I could search for it but I'm about to pass out so any help is appreciated

G is way better than B. Download the latest firmware for the router from linksys.com. Configure the router for WPA-PSK / TKIP encryption and call it a day. For increased range, the new N routers with "rangebooster" or whatever are pretty good. I recommend D-Link.

If that's the right model router, you can possibly run DD-WRT on it. It's a much better firmware. It will give you a ton of options and also the ability to increase your signal strength.
