Lack of 1st gear acceleration
Just purchased a new manual 2008 335i in New Jersey, pre-ordered with my specs. The concern I have is whether anyone else is experiencing the same problem as me. When I shift into first gear, it feels as if I am pulling a brick. There seems to be no acceleration until I shift into 2nd. How am I supposed to try and duplicate the sub 5 second 60, as advertised with the turbo, if it takes 4-5 seconds to get into 2nd gear? Is 1st gear only for rolling forward? I felt humiliated when a ford focus blew me away at the light. Once in a while, I like a spirited blast. Mind you, I just turned in my 2005 325i after 3 years and also a manual.

I have a 335i sedan with about 1600 miles now, and I definetly think the 6MT took about 800-1000 miles to break in and become smooth. I honestly don't step on it too hard in 1st anyways because our roads are so rough I don't want to tear up the tires spinning the wheels on them.
But anytime I have it seems pretty fast in 1st. It definitely needs to warm up a bit, I believe the engine management will lower boost before the oil temp gets up there. |

Yeah I kept it below 4000 RPMS for the first 750 miles and 4500 for the first 1200 miles... So I don't know if it would have felt 'slow' doing 0-60 runs during that time. As I understand it, engines break in and as they do they get better mileage and more power.

yup, but no clue what's up with the slow accel in 1st gear. to the OP: any long cranks when you start it up? (foreshadow of CEL and bad HPFP)

For what it's worth, I have a manny 330i that has 26K mi and well broken in and feel the same way. The first gear take off feels like someone is holding the gas pedal back for the first second or two. Would love to know if this is fixable

I have about 1100 miles on it after 3 weeks, so i may take it to the dealer to have some diagnostics run oon it. you may be right and the issue is just break-in. mind you, when i hit second gear, she becomes a pocket rocket. The Ford Focus ordeal just kind of pissed me off.

Hmm, honestly I don't know if I've ever done a 5 second or less 0-60 anyways, I think you'd really have to beat on the car to do that. Much to my chagrin, I think the automatic transmission is better at pulling off fast times without beating on the drivetrain.
I know on the mazda speed3 for example the engine is limited to 75% boost in 1st gear to prevent wheel spin.. is it possible this could be true in this car? |

I assume you're not getting alot of DSC intervention? That would obviously kill your acceleration, but you'd also notice the DSC light flashing like crazy on the dash.

1st gear is a very short one. maybe that's why it feels slow. you should really only get to about 30-40mph before hitting the redline. and the redline arrives *really* fast. so you get a lot of engine noise and drama for relatively slow speeds.
you should hit 60mph in 2nd so i think what you're experiencing is pretty normal.
