Chance to Pickup Clean E Series X5 as 2nd car
Has anyone on here owned a E70 X5? I have the opportunity to pick up a 2007 X5 4.8L with 138K miles. The car is in really good shape in and out and is owned by a tech at the local BMW dealer. It even has a dinan tune.
The owner has documentation that the following were replaced: Brakes, pads, rotors, fluid flush suspension front and rear battery plugs upper head rebuild timing chains Tires have 500 miles on them (they are a no-name brand however) I am waiting further details on the fixes done. Everything on the car i in working order and it drives really good for its mileage. Has anyone owned one of these on here? What else can i expect to go wrong? I want to buy it now and drive it about 10K a year for 3-4 years. Do you think the mileage is just too high even though alot of prevenative fixes have been done? Thoughts?

My wife has a 2012 E70 X5 3.0. I forget the exact mileage, probably around 50k. It's been pretty reliable, although during the first 4 years under warranty it had the evaporator replaced 4 times!
My experience with an E46 and E53 (2002 X5) is that once BMW's get over 100k miles it's best to figure about 1k in maintenance per year. Some years will be less, others more, but it'll probably average out to around 1k as something will always be needing replacement. Not necessarily due to poor quality, just age and mileage. |

My wife had a 2012 E70 and was a fantastic car but we traded up to an F15 when the whole airbag fiasco was underway (dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse).
One major under-warranty repair that was made was the xdrive transfer case. The only way I was able to determine it wasn't operating properly was when a U-turn was performed and you had the wheel fully turned locked, you would feel a shuttering and vibration until the wheel was straightened. The total job with parts/labor was over $7k. From what I gathered after doing the research, it is a common failure on the E70 but may be something of concern for the previous generation as it is something that you won't be able to uncover easily. When the transfer case mechanism wasn't working properly, I technically had no xdrive.

I did the same and ended up letting it go. Every now and then, I still find myself eyeing up an E30 vert but it always "looks" to good to be true.

I began looking for an e90 sedan and found probably the best condition 2011 328ix possible. It has 54K miles, always serviced with BMW and had an inspection prior to posting for sale. Its also being sold by an exotic dealer would not sell anything that wasnt mint. I dont know what to do at this point. Im trying to decide if its worth buying a second car or just keep driving the living piss out of my car.

Yeah you definitely have wiggle room there even though that number is about right if it's fully loaded. $15k is about the average, 11-12 for trade-in.
