Question Winter wheels for xDrive 540 (minus sizes?)

Hi all,

So my 540 is my 4th Bimmer, but it's acutally my first xDrive, all my 3 series having been RWD. In addition, this car was shipped with 20" Individual rims so I'm not putting winter tires on them puppies!

I usually go -1 or -2 for winters, to get more sidewall (I live in Quebec, the land of potholes) and more snow traction. But my current wheels are 17"... not sure if I can go -3 (I don't have M Sport breaks unfortunately but in this case I'm assuming it helps).

However, I was told that the choice of wheels is more important on xDrive models, but I have no idea why. My winter wheels are good, but not super high end so I want to see if I can salvage, or alternatively what should I buy for new wheels.

My dealership was obviously eager to sell me genuine BMW wheels and tires, but at $5G a set, I'll pass... besides I have a "tire guy".

Any helps will be greatly appreciated. I usually buy Michelin Xi3 if that makes any difference.

18" looks like the best choice.
245/45R18 front and back
I always go for Nokian Hakka/WR A3/D3

My car will be delivered with the standard M-sport 18", since I ordered the 636 20" so I will swap the rubber on those to winter.

With xDrive it's important to keep the tire diameter on the front and rear the same, I always heard within 1%.

But with winter tires I see no reason to go with anything other than the OEM sizes, so that won't be a problem. OEM 17" wheels will fit, but if you want aftermarket wheels, I'd check carefully if they'll fit before buying.

And remember that wheels fitted to older BMW's won't fit due to the new 5x112 bolt pattern.

5x112?? What odd ball pattern is that?!

But thanks to both for the tips.

Yes, same as what Audi, VW and Mercedes has.
The latest 7 series, 5 series, X1 and i3 and i8 has the new 5x112 bolt pattern, and I assume future models will get it too.
