First oil change question...

I did a search and didn't find exactly what I was looking for, so I am going to go ahead and ask. I just passed the 1200 mile mark and am through 4 tanks of gas or so. I am considering whether I should change out the oil and filter at this point. BMW will do it for $140 and I think we all agree that is a little steep. what are your thoughts on the change at this point, and since I have access to a very nice lift, how hard would it be as a DIY job? I am not terribly mechanically savvy and would hate to screw something up. I welcome all opinions (appropriate to the topic, that is). I was told by BMW I needed to use the specific oil and a BMW filter.

Just Go To The Search Box, Type In Oil And You'll Get A Few Threads Pertaining To This Subject, check The First Few, I Was Looking This Up Myself Here Yesterday ,and I Know There Is A Post With Full ,detailed Instructions On An Oil Change,it's Relatively Easy, especially If You Have A Lift, Some Recommend Doing It While The Engine Is Hot For Better Drainage, others Prefer A Cold Engine, anyways Do The Search And You'll See The Post In A Few Minutes.

I think the 1200 mile oil change requirement is only for the M with the S54 engine. My M had a special sticker on the windscreen telling me that an oil change at 1200 was required. My dealer did it for free.

What's The Deal With Capitalizing The First Letter In Every Word?

I would confirm that price, my first oil change (at 7,500 miles) only cost me $89.

You would've saved $40 if you did it yourself. Only reason I say that is cuz I love to work on cars. For some it's WELL WORTH the time to have someone else do it. To each there own I guess. $89 isn't bad for a dealership oil change :thumbsup.......it's just over $100 around here.

From what I have seen the amount of Mobil1 you need costs over $50. I have done some comparisons and it actually wasn't much more expensive having the shop do it. That is here in Iowa at least.

Around here I've NEVER seen Mobil 1 for over $5/quart. In most cases it's closer to $4/quart, although I haven't looked for oil in nearly a year, so I guess it may have gone up.
