Pull ahead but no local inventory?

I have a lease that ends on 2/1/18. I received a call from my client advisor today, asking if I would be interested in a pull ahead. I said that I might be, if he can find me the right car: 340i xDrive, 6M, with cold weather, M sport, technology, and driver assistance packages.

He later left me a voicemail saying that there aren't any with the options that I want. I found a few at dealerships that are around the country. Can my dealership swap or get a car from another dealer's inventory?

I've left him a voicemail but figured I'd go to the experts while I wait for his call back.

They can order what you want. That's exactly what I just did... got a new car built to my specs.

Many thanks! That's what I hope they can do. I found a few listings that look pretty good to me. None of which are close by, of course.

Why not just have them build the exact car you want in one of their factories and put it on a boat. You could prob get it by November.

I might do that. I was enticed by getting a new car even sooner.

Of course he can. It just costs him $$ to send a truck back and forth for the swap.

Yes. I had some particular needs for my 330e and my sales advisor did a computer search of every car that met my requirements in the US or on the way to the US. We found a car that met my needs in a dealership in another state. My dealership bought the car from the other dealership and trucked it down to my dealership.

But, of course, the other dealership must be willing to make the deal.

Yes, they do it all the time. But at this point in the sales cycle they'd rather move something off their own lot, so that's where you'd be able to negotiate the better deal. However, very few dealerships are independents, most are part of larger organizations, so you might still score a sweet deal if your dealer finds what you want at another that's part of the same corporate network.

I have custom-ordered two BMWs now with MT, which I would have done anyway since BMW is very good about allowing custom orders, but it's not like I had a choice. First time around my dealer found three cars east of the Mississippi with MT, none of which had options I wanted, and this second time my CA told me that it wasn't even worth searching for a car. (And I did confirm there were none around.)
MT is dying partially because no BMW dealer willingly stocks MT cars, and customers who want one come in and can usually be sold on a car on the lot. "Well we have this car which has everything you want except MT ...". Not everyone can or is willing to wait 6-10 weeks for delivery. If I was trying to get rid of MT cars, that'd be the strategy I'd take. In a survey BMW sent me I stated as kindly as possible it would be nice if they keep MT around.

Anyways, OP, absolutely place a customer order. Do Performance Center delivery since it appears time isn't of the essence ...you won't regret it.

I've also always driven manuals. The dealership argument about MT now - and it's hard to argue - is that anyone that is hardcore enough to want a manual is an enthusiast who is exacting in their requirements for options and colors. That's certainly true with me!

that's quite early for a pull ahead... are you sure that's what it really is? I'd be weary... just saying, could just be a ploy to get you in and then you have to "pay off the car or roll into next one"

really? *that* ? IMHO I've always seen people write 6MT, not just 6M. I didn't even realize what it meant right away.

Well, he says that they have to buy my car from BMW, so they need to determine the value, etc. sounding less like a great opportunity than the original call offering me the pull ahead. But I am impatient and like new things. So we'll see.

If one is on a ship and has not been delivered, your dealer can get that one before it leaves the port (if that 6M unit is in transit and has not been ordered by a individual). The dealer knows what is coming in as it is published for all dealers to see. Good luck!

Thanks again, all. I spoke with my CA today. He said that there weren't any cars with what I want anywhere. When I pressed him on this - I saw several listed on other dealer websites - he was surprised then agreed that what I had seen was available. He explained that would cost him a bunch in shipping charges to make a transfer; he didn't seem very interested in that. Then he explained that there is one en route, due to arrive on 8/7, with what I want. I'm not sure that I will be able to make it over to the dealer this week to have my car "evaluated" in time to make it work, though.

You HAVE to make it work. He found the car you want. See if they can set up an appointment at 7am, or in the evening. Maybe they can drive out to you. You can have your new car in less than 2 weeks, with exactly what you want. Don't be kicking yourself later because you couldn't find the "time" to make it work.
