I thought there was a temperature reading on the oil level??

I though I read before that there wasn?t an oil temperature reading on our cars. Well yesterday I noticed that upon firing up the car it displayed cold underneath the oil symbol with a temp gauge showing it warm up. I most be dumb as I have not seen this before. Here is the photo:

Please comment on whether this was already on the car.

It's always been there, it's a combination of oil and water temperature though.

I almost always keep this displayed and return to it if toggling through the menu options.

I always understood the car has no OIL temperature display in stock form.

Top temperature reading is outside temperature not related to Water/Oil.

Second I believed to be also water temperature related and would go from "COLD" to "OK" after the car comes into operation temperature. Cross fingers it never sees "HOT".

And bottom is just a graphical way of showing once more the water temperature in a bar form.

Can someone please clarify?

EDIT: Removed the image to avoid confusing other members.

That image above is incorrect (bar) if the manual is to be believed.

The value for OK is a computed result of oil AND water temperature.

You can find this on page 89 of the user manual AND in the M2 Technical training manual on page 67.

So when critics cry "there's no oil temp gauge, wahh wahh", there technically is, and like others this is the page I keep on my instrument cluster by default.

Sure, I'd rather see temp digits for oil, in that case the options are a P3 Gauge, Awron Display, or use the Torque app.

It would be interesting if those with the above could do some testing to evaluate what the 'actual' readings are of the oil/water temp once the slider reaches OK.

For a M car, I would expect this to be a full-time "gauge" and not a selection within several other "info" options.

Thanks for clearing that up!! I confess, I have never read the manual.

I do run Torque Pro App and can do a check on the operating temps. I have yet to do an Autocross using this setup but will definitely use it and do some data logs thru the Torque Pro App.

These temperatures were after a 30 min drive to work on a 90 degree Florida weather day.

P3 gauge: 86°C to 87°C oil temp = OBC digital temp indicator needle moves from the ultimate notch before the middle to the middle.

Yes, how did you get that display on the car monitor? Is that app downloaded from the BMW apps store?

to add: water temp was 84-85c when the cluster display moved to the very center. oil temp was also 86-87c on my awron display

turn on android screen mirroring using something like bimmercode, then run torque lite or pro on your phone. same OBD2 adapter you use for the coding will feed your phone. it's pretty slick.

You can view all temp info via the hidden menu. PIA to enter it though.

The new LCI cluster appears to have a separate readout for oil temp.
