So hot jets couldn't fly

I snapped this pic in our X5 on the way home from the airport last week. It was so hot certain jets couldn't operate, the Bombardier CRJ in particular which is only rated to 118F.

Happy to report the X5 had no issues, although I had to run the a/c higher than usual. It's heavily tinted (15% rear) and usually even in Phoenix summers the a/c runs pretty low (2-3 bars). Anyway this is why I paid the extra bucks for the extra couple %'s of TSER with the 3M Crystalline 40 in my 335i (I wanted it lighter but with the best heat rejection I could get for that level of tint). Interesting tidbit, even though the interior of the car is cool, when you touch a window in these kinds of temps with direct sun, the window is almost scorching hot even on the inside.

Next time it gets this hot and I'm out in the 335i I'll get a pic of the oil temp gauge as a reference point for those folks concerned about external temps affecting engine temps.

Stay cool my friends!

Do you have any issues with electronic signals after putting on 3M Crystalline? I heard it can especially effect FM radio signals.

That's because it's Canadian. It doesn't get that hot up in the Great White North...yet...hoser.

The radio antenna is atop the car. Metallic films can interfere with cell phone signals, Crystalline isn't metallic.

I think I played golf that day in North Scottsdale. Haha. But teed off at 6:30 and got through before it was too hot and used the phone app to turn on the AC in the car from the 18th tee. Not a bad way to live!

The jets can fly, it's just the programmers of the software used for their weight and balance and performance calculations never thought they'd be operated in that kind of heat, so they can't calculate their flight data that they need.

I'm no expert, but I read that there's also issues with take-off speeds and runway length. Hot air is thinner, so you need more speed/lift for takeoff (might have carry more speed when landing too). If it really is just a software thing and the hardware is capable, then I suspect some programmers are receiving a tongue-lashing

I guess the runways at Reagan National and Dulles are in need of serious lengthening.

Yes it's been hot in Phoenix. Surprisingly the oil temperatures remain cooler than normal in those super hot temps. It's as if the car is overcompensating for the extreme heat. This pic is from my 2013 335i with MPPK

Photo taken somewhere near I-10 and baseline.

I am an expert, the jets could easily fly with reduced payload/fuel. What you are talking about is more of an issue up at higher altitude, like Colorado Springs on a hot day, etc. where the air is thinner due to altitude. Although temperature also affects this, altitude is a much bigger effect. So even on hot days, the air at low altitude is fairly dense. The engines also reach temperatures that make 120 degrees fairly inconsequential, but the big problem lies in the software for the FMS. In 14 CFR 121 flight (airlines), they are required to calculate a myriad of performance figures, speeds, distances, climb, etc., to ensure the aircraft can take off and have the appropriate performance, lose an engine and continue, stop on the available runway, etc. These are predicated on inputs that are either sensed or input by the pilots. In the case of these temps, the software programmers just didn't foresee that these temperatures would be seen. The FAA regulations require them to calculate these values for safety, so if they can not, they are grounded. There are other issues in places like Phoenix, like the asphalt melting, but the big issue with the jets is the FMS programming. Several years ago this happened to all of the major airlines operating the bigger aircraft, like Airbus, but they got the software updated. Money drives everything in aviation, so once someone pays up, the "problem" will likely be fixed...
