Re-torquing wheel bolts - Proper way?
So this may sound like a stupid question, but I'm no expert:
Like many, I'm sure my wheel bolts are over torqued as when I got my tires swaped they used a impact gun. I have a proper torque wrench here at home. What is the proper way to re-torque them? Should I just back them off and then torque them correct? Or should I lift the car (wheel off the ground) and back them off, hand tighten and then drop the car and torque them? Basically I am wondering if having the wheel off the ground has an effect on the torque? I guess this answers my 2nd question, whenever I do work on the car that involves taking the wheels off: *WHEEL OFF GROUND* Hand tighten *DROP WHEEL TO GROUND* Torque Correct? Like I said, sorry for the stupid question but better to do things correct. I'm sure the weight of the car has an impact on the torque? |

This Then drive a few miles and re-tight (but without backing off the screws)

I have used a $40 torque wrench to change out winter/summer tires for 14 years....never had a problem
