I have a 328i xdrive and I have the abs and 4x4! Warning on only, not the trifecta. Tried just changing the actuator and resistor but that didn't solve the problem. The front wheels would turn a little bit but not full power, and the code was still on the dash. So my mechanic said it's the whole transfercase that needed to be changed. My question is, how is it possible for it to go bad at only 60k miles. And also, I'm looking at buying a used one, but since mine went bad at 60k miles I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to buy a used one and just shed the extra cash and get a new one. Also, is it possible to rebuild the transfercase because I'm assuming it's just the inner gears that are worn (again, the whole transfercase and not the actuator). I'm in Knoxville TN. So if anyone knows of a good part out place where I can get my hands on a good used transfercase let me know.

Check car-part to see if you have any local junkyards with the part.
Strange, maybe driving habits? Do you drive aggressively? |

Wrong size tyres can kill transfer cases prematurely. Also prolonged use of mixed tyre circumferences can do the same. eg one very worn tyre and 3 new ones, bald rears and new fronts etc
