Dinan Mid-Pipe Installed!

I received it on Wednesday last week and could not wait to get it installed. I wanted to do it myself as that is honestly one of the most fun parts about modding your car. I haven't found anything specific for the 2 series showing the install process, so I figured I will give it a shot on my own

I had all the tools I felt I needed except for an exhaust cutter. I was able to rent one from Canadian Tire. Two days later, I had it installed and now it's up and running! I vlogged the whole process to the best of my ability with hopes to help those who planned to do it themselves as well but have never done work like this before. Enjoy!

I am loving the change. Quiet as stock if you want to be. More pops and burbles (more noticeable in sport mode) while also bringing the overall volume a little higher. I haven't gone WOT as I am still in my 'break in' period of the car, so I cannot comment yet on tone/volume on the higher rpms. There is no drone either so I am completely happy with that!

awesome, and this would be a mod that can easily be reverted back to stock for those of us who are leasing?

I am also on a lease and I figured this is the least damaging route to the OEM parts. The only modification made was at the dimple of the OEM by cutting it.

By comparison, if you opted for the dual resonator delete, you would have to also cut resonators off to weld new ones in which some dealerships could pick a bone at depending on weld quality(?).

YMMV though. Best to probably just ask your dealership directly if they are OK with the mod first and decide from there which route to go!

Anyone install this with the MPE in place? How much harder is the install?

I haven't done this install, but the MPE is basically just the rear exhaust section, it will hook into that midpipe exactly the same way as the stock one.

The MPE would not mate with this correctly without some alteration to the piping. So far, only the OEM and Dinan muffler would fit.

Really? What's different about it? It mates up to the stock pipe just fine. If the dinan pipe mates up with the stock muffler, why wouldn't it mate up with the mpe?

That's what I was trying to confirm here from someone that has actually tried it, but from the looks of it and the install video/instructions the reason is that the Dinan mid-pipe is wider in the portion where it meets the stock exhaust so stock exhaust can slide into it. The MPE is the other way around, it's wider at the portion where it meets the stock mid-pipe so the stock mid-pipe slides into it. This means that the MPE cannot connect to the Dinan mid-pipe the same way that the stock exhaust can. It would be nice if Dinan made a version that didn't have a wider portion where it meets the exhaust...

The mid pipe on my car just butts up against th MPE. It doesn't slide into it. The clamp holds them together. Source: I was under the car last week adjusting this very thing.

Having the Dinan midpipe installed Tuesday, but after hearing the full midpipe/exhaust on an M240i today at a local show, it won't be long before I have the exhaust done as well. I had no idea the car could sound this good. Internet videos really don't do it justice.

Wow. Just brought the car home after having the midpipe installed. Definite increase in volume over stock, and the pops and burbles are much more prevalent and defined. Even with the windows up at freeway speeds, I can hear the pops and burbles on downshifts now. That's nice.

Can't say it did anything for feeling more responsive with throttle input, but I didn't have a good stretch of road to run on in rush hour traffic coming home. Will have to play around with it more tomorrow.

Tech at the dealer was able to level the tips perfectly, but the tips do stick out about a 1/2 inch more than they used to. Doesn't really bother me I guess.

Other than having a muffler shop delete both resonators and weld pipes in place, this is the best and cheapest way to make the M240i sound great. Plus it's all warrantied.

Thanks to the OP for the video and motivation to pull the trigger on this.

For all those interested, I installed the Dinan Midpipe with the MPE on my M240i.

I talked about it in another thread but you are correct, the Dinan Midpipe will not naturally mate up with the MPE because the 2 sides that are suppose to mate up are both around the same size, approx 3" in diameter. The MPE mated with the stock midpipe because the stock midpipe outlet/inlet was smaller, about 2.5" so the MPE went right above it. I haven't measured the stock exhaust but I am assuming it went inside the stock midpipe inlet. That is why I think the Dinan midpipe, having a 3" outlet went around the stock exhaust with no issues. I could confirm this since they are all in my garage but I'm too lazy but its the only scenario that makes sense to me. haha

So I had to modify the dinan side a little to mate the MPE but that combination is just on a whole new world. It sounds great and I just love it. Better than MPE alone with stock midpipe by a mile. Better than stock exhaust with Dinan midpipe by an equal mile. No drone and can be quiet if you don't really push on the gas (e.g. at a red light) or just cruising in eco mode) but on WOT or just a little throttle, it comes alive. A lot more responsive too and I attribute that to the midpipe with no resonators. My favorite mod so far. Even more than the Dinan Elite tune I got. =)

That's great info, thanks! I wonder if cutting off a couple of inches from the Dinan midpipe and then using a 3" sleeve clamp to mate the two will work... Are you sure the MPE pipe diameter is 3"?

BTW, the stock exhaust (non-MPE) is one piece with the stock midpipe. To install the MPE, it's a a cut and clamp procedure.

Doh! You are correct, yeah I cut the stock away from the midpipe so if the midpipe is about 2.5 then the stock is around 2.5 and hence why the dinan could fit right over it with a larger diameter outlet. That makes even more sense now that I think of it. We measured the Dinan (and it was about 3" if I remember correctly) and it was about the same size as the MPE when compared next to each other so just using some deduction, I'd say the MPE is about that same size, hence why it didn't fit. So I modified the dinan end to go from 3 to 2 1/2 or something to fit inside the MPE and clamped that down. I don't know the exact size but it's roughly around there I believe.
