An observation
I picked up a new 2017 330i yesterday. The night before I was preparing my 2013 F30 trade in. Going through the glove box I pulled out the folio holding the owners manual. I noticed it was made of vinyl and remembered back to my e30 that had a real leather case for the owners manual. Cutting corners...
The 2017 owners manual is now nylon :-S

Maybe BMW just figured that there was no point in gussying up the cover for something that experience tells them the vast majority of owners will never use.

yeah they became stingy on a lot of stuff going forward, some that i can think of, what you pointed out, the leather manual case is plastic instead of leather, they decreased the amount of USB ports, they took away the tinted windshield, the hydraulic steering and good feel along with it (guess all the mfgs did this), took away the spare tire and tried to force run-flats on all, took away sound deadening insulation causing more noise in the cabin, softened the suspension, continued with the horrid Halogens and got rid of Xenons which are better then the LED non-adaptive, took away Oil Dip Stick, took away the Head-light washers too...lets see, took away sliding cover for cup holders then brought it back lol, took away the covered maintenance items in the first 3 or 4 years... most of these are cheapening and annoyances but still cheapens the brand, I still love the car better then the competition despite it all so they must be doing something right, I guess they are doing more stuff right then wrong, as they are selling them.
Congratulations on the new car SpenceRx, enjoy it in good health Last edited by BMW11; 06-12-2017 at 10:00 PM.. |

If it makes you feel any better my 2016 430i has a plastic manual cover, as did my 07 e92 325i. I didn't even get a service book with my 430i because aparently that info is all stored on the key.

I didn't want this to turn into a thread where we point out all the areas where they cut corners. If I had issues I would not have bought a second F30 and fifth three series. It was merely an something I noticed as a change.

I notice they took away the floor mat magic tape from the back seat floor. Passenger will slide the floor mat under the front seat when they get out of the car, didn't happen on my E90 330i with the magic tape. The vanity mirrors are nearly 1/4 smaller compare to E90.

On a more serious note, there are things other than manual covers, where less expensive materials have been used in the past 10+ years. For example, leatherette (no matter what cool marketing "sensa" name is used for it ) for example just shouldn't be an option on certain cars. |

This 330i does have two fewer cylinders than my E46 330Ci does.

I'm a huge BMW fan. I heard they were coming out with the 330i and my first thought was my E46. I work at a dealership and have driven the new 330i. They're nice in their own right. Just doesn't have the feel of the older version. But that's pretty much the way it is across the board. Some for the good. Some not so much.
