BMW dealership dented my trunk when i was in service.

Today I went for a oil change and a standard vehicle inspection. Brought in my car at 10am and was told by my advisor that ill have it back by 2pm. I came back at 2:45pm and my advisor told me that they are really busy today and the mechanics haven't had the chance to start working on my car yet. But he promised ill have it by the end of the day. I can back at 5:30pm since they closed at 6pm. At 6:10pm I finally got my car and realized that theres a dent in the back of the trunk above the BMW emblem. I immediately seek my advisor and told him about the dent. Then we proceeded outside to see the damage. Minutes later the service manager came out and said he heard us talking about the dent. They both seem like they didn't know anything about this. Asking me things like if I was certain that this dent didn't happen before coming in and that they will need to check the cameras to make sure. As we were walking back inside all of a sudden and i swear the service manager basically said yep your car was damaged by us and that BMW will fix it at no cost. Told me to come back Monday to get a loaner car since the repair will take 4 to 5 days.. The problem that I'm having is still being really upset even though they said the dent will be fixed by them. Should i ask for something more because of the troubles and inconvenience they have caused me? Is this something that can be fixed without repainting the trunk?

It is...unfortunately, what it is. I wouldn't try and press for much at the cost of possibly burning your bridges with your dealer. However, I would push for SOMETHING.

Also, ask about how and what they're doing to fix the dent. PDR? Filler? OEM parts only.

I wouldn't accept anything less than a new trunk lid.

As long as they get a good PDR guy, you'll never notice the difference. I'd be pissed, too, but shit happens and it's how they deal with it that matters most to me.

There seems to be not paint damage, so PDR should work OK.

sorry to see this hopefully the dealer will fix it perfectly. I would say yes, ask for something for your inconvenience. Im in NYC too and some BMW service departments are run better then others I have seen. In my opinion problems like this boils down to the service crew rushes haphazard to get as many cars done per hour; making it a risk leaving your car. I usually take a video of the car insides and outside when I arrive on their premises you never know what a dealer will pull. A lot of dealers do not have enough room in their service areas which is another problem. They play "shuffle roulette" risking car damage continually. I went to dealer on a late morning and have found cars lined up to the service entrance with cars running idling and unattended and it is very troubling to see this. it makes me mad when you bring a car in for service and be "subject to their neglect"

Holy shit!! I was expecting a dime sized dent. That's crazy that you had to show that to them and they didn't notice the big country sized dent.

I wonder how you make a dent like that, without even scratching the bumper?

Anyway, you can't repair that, it's a new trunk for sure.

PDR is your aim, new trunk will have to be painted obviously & will the paint match be good?

If it were me:

I'd want to know where/how it happened
Why wasnt i told soon as it happened
Strict email to bmw
compensation of some kind for the hassle it will cause.

Agree with evdok. Keep your original trunk and paint. Go PDR.

I would expect something "in consideration" for what happened. Big thing is they didn't tell you up front. Nothing bothers me more than that. No way the Tech didn't know he backed your car into something. Another customer's car? Did they say anything to that customer? Such BS.

Best of luck with resolution. You may want to call BMW and let them know just in case it turns into a shit show.

I agree that how they handle it and treat you are the most important things here. PDR is the best solution if that's possible, but I'm not sure PDR will work on that particular dent. It may require a new trunk lid. Good luck.

So I figured out PDR is paintless dent repair. Make sure they do it for free. Won't likely get a new trunk lid. Their insurance should cover the cost.

I think the biggest issue is that you're still upset after they owned up and are fixing it instead of hassling you over it. It's your DD, not a concours car. Stuff happens. Chill, let them fix it to your satisfaction (and if they give you some bonus, ok, but don't be a dick and pressure then for extra compensation. They're not leaving you stranded without a car, right?), thank them for making your car beautiful again, and drive away. Believe me they didn't want this to happen. It's costing them big time to repair this.

I'd be upset over the carelessness as well. But at least the paint isn't scratched, they agreed it was their fault (an argument over who had done it is even worse), that they'll fix it, and provide a loaner. The hassle is annoying for sure. You'd hope for some compensation for the hassle but I doubt it'll come.

Just remember that PDR still costs them time and money so they're suffering for it too. It's in no one's best interested to have a car damaged during servicing

Right now im hoping for a new trunk. I tried calling today for more details and how they will fix the dent but couldnt reach anyone that could help my problem. The service manager did tell me the other day that the dent cannot be fix at BMW and i will have to go to a local shop that they recommend to do the repairs. I would be happy with a PDR job but it doesnt seem like its possible. Its worse in person and its near the edge. Thanks for all the feedback.

PDR won't work because the dent crosses into the lower crease.

Even if this dent wasn't on a crease, our trunks are made of aluminum. Which does not have memory like a steel panel would. Don't except anything less than a new OEM trunk. A quality job should blend the new paint into the bumper and rear fenders too for a perfect match.
