Trunk pops open by standing or walking by side of vehicle

I have the kick to open comfort access feature and noticed that when parked in one particular location my trunk would pop open just by walking next to the vehicle with the key fob in my pocket. This never happens anywhere else. Any reason why this would occur?

Happens to me too. Do you have a carbon fiber rear diffuser? They are known to cause interference with the trunk sensor. I coded mine out, it's the only solution if you have the cf diffuser. Otherwise there might be something in that parking spot causing the signal to bounce in a certain way.

That's weird that it must be seeing an object in the sensor that looks like a foot or something. I tried using my foot earlier and it wouldn't open so I touched the handle and it opened but flashed the hazard lights as if triggered by my foot. I then did it again and it worked normally. Somehow the sonar is reading a foot and thinks the floor is close to the sensor so it can't see my foot. Maybe the rear defuser in your case is reflecting back to the sonar there may be a foreign object caught in it interfering with the sensor. I'll probably keep it as it's an added feature that lets me open the trunk when my arms are full and I'll notice it when it opens when it's not supposed to.

Have you coded the car before? Seems like the commands are being mixed. Usually if you use your hand to pop open the trunk it doesn't flash.

No I didn't get it coded. I think it's just the sonar reading incorrectly at that location.

This has happened to me twice. Once it was in my carport, and the other time it was parked on a gravel driveway. I was walking around from one side of the car to another. Because of the slight delay, it was impossible to say just where I was to trigger it.

In both cases the car was pointing north. Is it possible the shadow of my leg triggered it?

Slightly OT: after I got delivery of the car, I proudly showed off the comfort access kick to my wife. Worked perfectly. I reclosed the trunk lid and invited her to try it. She stepped back as she should, hauled back and nailed the bumper with a beautiful kick -- whack! I'll do it from now on, dear.

same issue here. i've seen threads going back to 2015 on this, though. dealer says there is a bulletin out there and reprogrammed my entire car. the bulletin asserts that it is user error in accidentally hitting the trunk button in one's pocket. i know this isn't true as i've had it out of my reach and activate the trunk pop.

are you able to consistently recreate your issue at that one location, bimmer456 ?

if you could show this with the remote laying flat out of reach of pressure that would be amazing. mine seems random, though. sometimes working on the car, cleaning the car, showing folks the car.

so the bulletin has the dealer reprogram the logic of the remote to require an unlock command first then the trunk release. so just hitting the trunk release on the fob no longer has the trunk pop open.

Yes it seems to happen pretty consistently. I don't think I'm pressing the button in my pocket and would need the key fob with me so I'm near the car anyway. Not sure what you mean about reprogramming the button, I would like to pop it just using my leg not having to also press the button, would defeat the purpose as I could just press the button then.

I am having this same issue with my 340 I got a couple months ago. I don't think it is the button on the fob in pocket as my last f30 didn't have comfort access and I never had the truck just pop open. I almost want to find a way to disable the kick open bc I can't recreate it to get it fixed.

Might help if you keep the keyfob inside the house while washing your car. Could be that you are inadvertently placing a bucket near the rear fender that is picked up by sonar as you walk behind the car with your keyfob in your pocket.

Might be anecdotal but my trunk started popping open as described above as soon as I had the M3 lip spoiler installed on the trunk lid. Never happened before that.

Full disclaimer though, aside from getting the M3 lip spoiler I also had the trunk lid, rear bumper, and MPPSK installed at the same time so I have no way of knowing if it's due to the lip spoiler to begin with.
