EGR Cooler and Air Filter Replacement...after 23k miles
So I've had the week from hell it seems. Car gets vandalised in consecutive days being keyed and then scratched again by someone else's car in the car park (without leaving a note). Then this week the engine warning light comes on. So i took it in to the dealer and they send me a vid this afternoon showing the air filter needs replacing and a leak in the EGR cooler unit, so that needs replacing too.
Cost quoted for these two - £1100! Plus a bulge in the front tyre, so that needs replacing too - new set of tyres required. The car's 3.5 years old and has done 24k miles so just outside of warranty by a few months. This is a bit much to take in - with the scratch and other repairs, plus tyres its almost £3k. Any advice appreciated. Is £1100 for the EGR and Air Filter reasonable? That sounds excessive to me. Saying that the Air Filter is completely clogged but surely that would be picked up at the service/end of warranty check only a few months ago? |

Air filter is part of the routine servicing schedule : replaced every second service I think, although I elect to have mine changed every service. From memory it's about £75 fitted.
>£1,000 for replacing the EGR seems excessive to me. I'd be arguing for a serious amount of goodwill to replace it FOC bearing in mind that it's a known defect.

Thanks Watsey - picked up the other thread on this just after my post and it seems a common issue, as you say. I read someone paid about 700 for the EGR which means they are trying it on at £1100 for both.
I will be arguing this hard tomorrow! |

the egr cooler unit is a separate part to the egr valve, and I can believe it to be alot more expensive than just an egr valve. albeit you may not need a new valve, just a cooler.

The egr cooler is prone to cracking.... it seems to be a common fault. I had mine replaced under warranty at about 2yrs / 24k miles.
When I'm in the dealers, ive heard the service agent speaking to lots of people about egr cooler needing / being replaced |

I had Egr cooler replaced last month under warranty @ 30 months and 57k. Dealer stated it was very common. I didn't realise it cost that sort of money. Tough to swallow. If you've always been to same dealer I'd definitely be arguing for goodwill of at least 50%.

Managed to get them down to £425 for the lot. Air Filter and EGR replacement plus the diagnostics and engine reprogram. The forum has proved priceless once again. Thanks for your help guys.
