Awkward Gear Change

Need some advice/comments on the manual shifts. I've got a E92 325 manual and I just can't hack the gearchange. I've always driven manuals, but I find the shift in the 325 jerky and clumsy. It's worse when changing down to lower gears, 3, 2,1 or changing up from lower gear 1,2,3. But fine in the higher gearing. Also sometimes when i press the clutch to change year, there's a thud...is this normal ? A mate who has an 2003 330i says his was also the same. It's a shame if it is, it ruins the driving experience.

Also, I probably get it checked out, can any one recommend a decent dealer in the Bristol area, I hear Dick Lovelett is not too good.

Cheers.

there are countless posts about this already. it's the CDV found in all 3ers that is making the shifts jerky. if you don't know what i'm talking about, search for "CDV" on these forums.

How many miles has the car done?

BMW gearboxes are notoriously notchy for the first 10,000 or so miles.

You have to be quite physical with them until everything is bedded in properly.

I find mine to be a bit rifle bolt action like, and I have to be positive with it to get a good smooth shift.

helps if you're on the gas a little too, I mean that in two ways....

You need to be a little aggressive to get the best change and I find a little load on the pedal, i.e. not so much clutch, not off the gas pedal so much helps too.

Correct, Dick Lovett in Bristol were appalling when they did my first E90 service (I bought my car there). Absolute joke. I got better service when I owned a £5k 206. I can't suggest an alternative sorry. Do a search on the BMW website but I advise to stay clear of DL Bristol

You took a 206 to Dick Lovett?

If you're prepared to travel north a bit I've found Cotswold in Gloucester and Cheltenham to be generally pretty good. Though they are about to have a third go at the rattle in the rear of mine.

No!! What I meant was I had better service from Peugeot dealers when I had a 206. You spend £30k-40k on a car and yet DL Bristol just don't give a shit... end of...

this might be a possiblity....if BMW can't built sports coupes with a slick gearchange this is very worrying. All the cars i've driven in the passed hasn't as been as bad as my beemer....and i've driven some bad cars

I actually meant the sell comment more as a joke to Paul (having sold his car last week).

However, if you really aren't happy with the car then it might be an option you want to consider.... after a very long test drive of whatever else you might consider.

You should go back to your dealer (or another better dealer) and get a testdrive in a similar car. This will be an easy way of telling whether the problem is unique to your car.

If so, then you have a very good case to get the problem sorted once and for all.

Good luck.

I drove a manual 325i E92 coupe a few months ago and I thought the box was poor compared to BMWs of the past. I have done about 150,000 miles in manual bmws and it was really notchy and dissapointing.

The manual box in my car was VERY notchy for the first 10,000 miles. Especially when trying to engage 2nd.

After 30,000 miles of use it's absolutely spot on. As good as any of my earlier BMW's.

I reckon so. Second gear was actually quite difficult to engage for the first few thousand miles in my car.

Firm positive action is needed to loosen things up

Does anyone know if the jerky gearchanges are now fixed with a software upgrade ?? I still have problems with my car...it seems to have improved a bit, but it just really bad compared to my other cars (Toyota and Mazda). Cannot seems to make smooth changes without lots of concerntration and getting gas and clutch release just right. I've read on these forums that there is a software upgrade for 320d, but does this apply to E92 325's ??

I have a 320d and it recently went in for a service at which I believe they upgraded the software. It did make a difference to how the car felt but the gear changes still felt awkward and it was still difficult to make smooth changes. Just had the car remapped and one thing I have noticed is how smooth the gear changes are now, like night and day different in my opinion. Anyone else with a remapped car feel like this now about gear changes?
