Update to my Air Conditioning saga on my 340i - final entry

So finally concluded the story on my 340 and the air conditioning failure. Quick recap so others don't have to search the whole reliability thread to find the pieces:

A/C failed in February (I think). Took it in, BMW had it for a week and change, and gave me a loaner. By the time I got it back, it was cold again. (Richmond winters are all over the place, temperature-wise). At any rate I didn't have cause to really use the A/C for a few more weeks...

At which point, I discovered it once again didn't work. Took it back to BMW. They put me back in a loaner, and started replacing parts, I mean troubleshooting.

I was in that loaner for over a month. On the last week before I got it back, I called to confirm that my car was ready as promised. My SA, who was great BTW, insisted that they keep the car another day to confirm it was still working the next day...

And it wasn't - had stopped working again. It's at this point that I kind of lost my cool. Wrote a pretty angry email to my CA, who was also great, and asked for some help convincing BMW to make this right for me. Didn't have anything specific in mind, but made the point that I was considering buying an extended warranty at significant cost to myself specifically because their car was proving to be MUCH less reliable (and repairable) that I'd expected. My jaw dropped when....

I got a call from my CA indicating that he and the SA had worked with the Service Manager to plead my case to BMW. BMW had proposed to replace the entire car. Which because of my build options, meant ordering one. So I scheduled my appt to confirm all the options and maybe add Carplay, since I hated the way my iphone was always freaking out when switching between music and podcasts. Went in to spec out my BRAND NEW 2017 340 and....

Took one quick chance on asking if I could throw a little more money at them and see if there is a 2017 M3 without too many bells and whistles that I could afford to pay up to get instead of a new 340. There was one and only one that I could find in a color I didn't hate (Not a huge fan of many of the F80 colors). It's a Black on Beige with Exec Pkg and not much else...

And it's going to be MINE next week!!!

The end.

Can't say enough about the service team at my dealership and their willingness to stick with me on the problem. Turned a really frustrating experience into my dream car. I feel like the car fairy visited one night, waved a magic wand over my almost 1-yr old 340 with 17k miles and [took some money out of my wallet but also] transformed my dream car into my ultimate dream car.

I'll update this thread with pics if/when my new ride shows up. That's all, folks!

Sounds like a great resolution to a bad situation, glad things worked out for you!

Wow, was not expecting an a/c problem to lead you into an F80! Best a/c issue ever. Glad it worked out and they took care of you.

Lol - you're not the only one to ask for that. I promise that as soon as the deal is done, I'll share.

The whole thing is taking longer than I thought, but hoping to be done this week!

The deal is almost done! Car is at the dealership. Can't sign papers until tomorrow, but I went by tonight for visitation hours!

Ha! I wish I was that good. I'd have chained together 3 or 4 of these until I was driving an M6GC

Congrats! I had a similar experience with my wifes 2016 X5 35i that had electrical gremlins that my local dealer could not resolve. Car only had 3k miles on it.

To make a longer story much shorter, the local dealer worked with BMW to do a substitution of collateral, which is, on a lease, they basically just end up swapping a different VIN number into your lease paperwork.

Different VIN number but same terms, payment etc. My wifes X5 35i was a 72k one, so fairly loaded, but the dealer ordered me an X5D built exactly to my wifes specifications, and with an MSRP of 76k. My lease payment is still the same, which is what I wanted as I had negotiated a pretty killer deal on my 2016 at the time and know my way around a BMW lease per se.

I really felt like BMW took care of me (doesnt hurt that both my wife and I drive 2016 MY BMWs but still). We dont hear enough of these stories online, because the people are happy and generally just go on about their business. Its the upset people we tend to hear about more.

Anyway congratulations! Your BMW dealer just likely got themselves a pretty darn loyal customer :-)

Yep! Very happy customer here. Can't say enough about the dealer: Richmond BMW of Midlothian

One more update: My car is for sale for anyone who might be interested. Dealer has it listed as CPO. Other than the issue with the A/C, I still think it was a great vehicle. Here's the link:

Oh - and the F80 is fast. Soooo fast.
