TPMS and what is it

Hi all, excuse the lack of knowledge.

I'm wanting to replace my OEM alloys and tyres with a set of new wheels and tyres that I've found on wheelbase.

My question is...what about the tpms...where is it located? Do the new wheels just fit on or do sensors need changed? Where are the sensors located? inside the rim and tyre?

The new wheels and tyres set i've found don't suggest anything about TPMS, is it just a straight swap...old wheels off, new wheels on? They would be getting delivered with tyres on.

Excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge, any advice appreciated.

Depends on the age of the car as to whether you have full TPMS (there are individual pressure transducers in the wheel valve assembly) or the earlier RDC which uses ABS sensors to detect different rotational speeds.

If you can see the actual tyre pressures in the iDrive you have TPMS and therefore will need TPMS valves for the new wheels if you don't want errors on the iDrive.

It's a 2013 car. No pressures on the I-drive. This is where i get confused. As i thought the pressures could be added with coding. Not because of the sensors themselves.

No clearly you have to have pressure transducers (sensors) to display the pressure. It's not to do with coding - if the car has full TPMS then the pressures are displayed without any coding. (Coding can give temperature as well which isn't displayed as standard).

Anyway on a 2013 car you will just have RDC so there are no sensors so the new wheels will fit without any faff.

Are you not thinking of tyre temperature being added via coding?

My 2012 328i just has the basic ABS type TPMS

If you have ordinary rubber tyre valves then yours will be the same

My tyre fitter said the pressure sensing valves are all metal. Whether that's true I don't know

Interesting you say that, I have those, but no pressures indicated in Idrive.

So what do I have?

Pressures or temperature? As the later models show both!

You can code both pressures and temperatures on a 2013 or 2014 with TPMS.
HU_CIC or HU_NBT => RDC_SAFETY = switch to aktiv

You have a TPMS installed as your valve stems are metal.

Your car was built right around the transition time. My F30 was a Jan 14 build (March 14 reg) and came with rubber stems.

I think it was the March/April 14 builds that the proper system became standard.

New cars can be coded to work with the ABS sensors... This could have been done at some pint?...

Are you the original owner? Do you know if the fitted wheels are original? Could they be a later addition?

I had car from new, never had any temps or pressure displayed.
Does not bother me in slightest, just wondered as other said that with metal stems I should have had pressure showing.
As you said mine must have been right at point of transition and I have hybrid of both.
