335d Smog Check - OBD "NOT READY FOR TEST"

I have a 335D and had to disconnect the battery to remove an accessory. I need to get it smogged, but the ECU is reporting "not ready" on OXY and one other sensor.

Is there some magic bullet to have this "ready"???? Why does BMW have to make EVERYTHING so COMPLICATED????

Mine took upward of 400 miles of driving to set last year.

It's not really "BMW" all cars go through a check that take a handful of miles to complete.. generally it is a few key cycles in conjunction with a handful of miles driven... Hearing 400 miles sounds like a lot!!!

Yeah it's not a bmw specific thing, any obd2 car requires driving to set the monitors.

Yeah, but the drive cycle required to reset all monitors is way longer on a BMW diesel vs a typical gasser since you will need to complete two full regens of the DPF.

Carly has a special mode where you can check to see what readiness monitors are left. It's under "OBD Functions".

That's what I used when I went in for a smog check last month.

If I recall correctly, for diesels of certain model years (all E90 335d are included), you're allowed up to two monitors "not ready" and it will still be considered a pass. At least that's how it is in California.

You can also force a DPF regen through Carly if that would help you get that particular monitor ready and within the passing limit mentioned above more quickly.

Additionally, I believe driving at around 55mph for 30 minuets straight could help speed up the process and get all the monitors ready.

Mine did not require 400 miles or two full regents. Just about 100 miles and one regen. I had one monitor left to go when I went in, but as stated above, you get up to two and can still pass.

YMMV.

My 96 jeep cherokee required 50 key cycles and specific driving sequence to set all the monitors. While I guess you could just start it over and over in the parking lot, realistically it was a month of driving around town. The quickest ive seen a gas car set the monitors is 50 miles, and that was just enough to pass smog but wasnt all the monitors set yet. It takes a while, just gotta give it time.

I recall you need to drive 100 miles without any issues, then the OBD will report as NO CODES FOUND

in NY only one monitor can show as not ready...pretty sure NY follows CA's lead although looks like CA is moving to zero quickly.

Lastly here is the bmw guidline for reseting readiness on a 335d

It is interesting that NY only allows one, since as you state, CA is typically the strictest state.

Here is the CA resource:

I just failed CA smog w/ a pass on emissions but two fault codes in the ERG. Car is at the dealership now for a assessment. They gave me a 17 330i and I miss the torque already.

Only one not ready will pass gassers in Tx. No OBD check for diesels here. 👏

repairs - $655

"We found that the SCR metering module at the exhaust is not working upon activation. We will need to replace this part. $665.00 installed includes tax. We show to have this part in-stock and we could get done today."

I'll pay it, get it smogged, and fight with BMW USA for repairs.

You can find those a lot cheaper. Check eBay and it's very easy to R&R.

Get either part. R&R is like 2 hours absolute maximum.
