Resonating

Anyone else noticed a slow resonating sound when travelling between 70 and 80?

Similar to the effect you get on large ships. Never noticed it before and wondering if its new or I've just not picked up on it previously.

This isn't some police trap to make people say they have driven in excess of 70mph?

I get this coming from what I think is the front N/S wheel, between 70 and 80 as you say. Pretty sure it's the wheel bearing but I haven't gotten round to getting it changed.

It's probably tyre noise. How new are your tyres?

Fronts are ~4 month old Goodyear Eagle F1's. It's a slow, intermittent humming noise that gets louder and more frequent on right hand motorway bends between 70-80, i.e when there is load on that side.

Had an issue on the old E92. There was harmonic vibration from the heat sheild under the gear box. That reduced it but it continued and we found it was the actual box. It was going to be covered under warranty but I was so fed up I chucked it in and brought an F32.

I had noticed the same. Car had just covered 2000 miles and was surprised I hadn't noticed it previously. Same as you describe, 70 - 80 it would start but I couldn't feel it through the wheel or peddles.

I booked it into the dealer and went out on a drive with there tech, whom initially thought it was an under tray loose or something to do with the XD.
Long story short and weird as it sounds, it was found to be the front passenger side tyre. The tyres fitted are Bridgestone Run Flats and once they switched over to the drivers side the resonance stopped.
The dealer inspected the tyres off the wheel and found no damage and have said that if it reoccurs they will replace the tyres FOC.

Great thanks. I've only just put my summer wheels back on so maybe that's it.

I'll check it out.

When the edges of the tread blocks have feathered off the resonance may well return.

Same problem

Hi All. My 2013 330D x drive has this exact problem. Sounds like the noise comes from the front left wheel arch. I had 4 brand new tires fitted but the sound remains. Did anyone find a fix?

Cheers

I've had this before its generally tyres.

Even small bulges on tyre wall can cause this.

I seem to be suffering from a similar problem...

Basically I ditched the Bridgestone run flats for a set of MPSS 6 months ago and ever since I've had this droning sound which is most noticeable at around 70 mph. The sound doesn't change pitch the faster or slower I go, it's just a constant drone. This rules out wheel bearings. It sounds like it's coming from the O/S front but I can't be sure on that. The new ACS sports suspension has exacerbated it and the sound is bordering on unbearable now! It is alleviated slightly by increasing to 80mph but it never truly goes away, and even at low speeds (as low as 30mph) it's there, albeit to a much lesser extent.

Whatever it is, I know it's directly or indirectly related to the MPSS tyres because it only started when they were fitted. The garage that fitted them fitted one of the rears the wrong way round, which I noticed a week after, so I'm not sure if rotating the wrong way for a week perhaps damaged the construction somehow?? The tyres have since been removed and fitted to new rims by BMW and the drone still persists. Playing around with the tyre pressures seems to have no effect. Has anyone heard of tyres, in particular the MPSS doing this? Perhaps a faulty set? Everyone always raves about them but in my experience they've been the noisiest tyres I've ever owned and it cancels out everything that's good about them over the run flats.
