Tyre cut... what would you do?

As per pic there is a substantial cut to the tyre, but in the deepest part of the tread.

BMW dealer flagged it today at a service, said there was a cord damaged and made me sign a disclaimer that I knew it "wasn't roadworthy" !

I took it to tyre place to see what they'd suggest. They said that whilst deep it's not affected the tyre's structural integrity as when any nail goes through a tyre there's always cords damaged and they can be repaired without issue, especially centrally places ones.

They didn't see any point in a puncture repair as it's not actually punctured and they said there was still significant tread at the bottom of the hole and in effect was no deeper than the bottom of the channels anyway.

Anyway, curious as to what others think!

Replace the tyre.

Because I've got other things to do with my time and money if it's unnecessary!

It's worth it to get the tire warranty when you get new tires through BMW so if they deem it not road worthy they will replace it for free.

If it doesn't go beneath the tread block I would leave it. Looks like a screw has been embedded sideways.

The local tyre place was adamant that it didn't. I think if it wasn't 6mm+ when it happened then might be a different story though.

Absolutely fine for normal or even spirited road use imo.

If taking the car on track or high speed on autobahn then possibly a different matter. I would want absolutely perfect tyres to do 150mph personally.

But we can't see the full damage, from Terry's pictures.

Seems the tyre shop is not disputing the depth and cord damage mentioned by the dealer. If it is structurally damaged, there is doubt to its soundness!

No, they poked around and could see one damaged cord. But then he pointed out that any time they remove a nail and repair a puncture they always see a few damaged cords as well.

I'm afraid that level of blanket risk aversion, rather than balanced consideration or risk/benefit is not the way I approach life.

If you give me a reasoned technical appraisal of why you think that then I'm all ears.

Agree with your approach. If I were concerned, I would have the tyre removed and mushroom patched.

I did actually wonder about that! I've got some glue for repairing trainers that I thought might be worth trying.

You know what dealers are like, err on the side of litigation always. Me? I'd go with your tyre dealer but for peace of mind might ask them to patch it up if they can. Funnily enough, I had my car serviced today as well and they spotted a bulge in the OSF tyre, no disclaimer to sign though.

I assume it's a Runflat, if so I wouldn't worry about it!

Nope, it's a Pilot Super Sport.

When the rears need changed I'm looking to move to PS4S though, so really don't want to be buying another MPSS unnecessarily.

I'd be more worried by a bulge, as to me that sounds structural.

I wouldn't worry about it. Don't use super glue as it can harden and puncture the tyre again. There are some rubber glues out there but probably bot suitable for car tyres. You can patch it in case though.
