The "Spec a 330d for under £40k list" game...
What with the new road tax, I thought I'd just have a bit of a play on the configurator to spec a 330d to avoid the luxury car tax premium.
I took the 330d Luxury as my base and managed a reasonable spec. Trouble is, I don't know how much of the list price on the BMW is actually taxable. Then I tried a bit of research and was unable to find the answers. I know that the £40k does not have to include road tax for example. Answers on a postcard please... |

Yes I know that; just specced a 330d M-Sport, Estoril, Oyster, Professional, HK for £40,165. Slightly over but a 330d Luxury, Mineral, Turbines, Oyster, Prof Nav and HK lists at £39,865. Presumably that includes £140 road tax so so I have another £200+ for another option???

Should be able to knock £6/7K off the price with options. Although picked up in March my 330d total invoice came to 39500.
Options included xdrive, msport plus, prof media plus, adaptive suspension, speed limit display, lumbar support (on account of a dodgy back), 5 year service plan Have to admit not sure whether tax applies to invoice price or whole price? |

I thought it would be like this... that is including delivery. However it does not include first year road tax costs. I think. So what does BMWs published list price include?

Even if you negotiate a discount with the dealer that drops the price of the car back under £40,000, you'll have to pay the fee, because the listed price will still be more than £40,000. The list price is the price of the car before the 'on-the-road' charges are added, such as a delivery charge, new vehicle registration fee, numberplates and fuel. |

Yep, that is confusing. As I said above I'm not sure about the delivery charge. I would have thought that they might use the P11D value which includes delivery but not the tax...
http://www.parkers.co.uk/company-car.../what-is-p11d/ "The P11D value of your car comprises the list price, including VAT, plus any delivery charges, but does not include the car's first registration fee or its annual road tax." |

If you absolutely have to stay under £40k I would say get a 320d M Sport with decent spec and then put a tuning box on it.
Yes it will still be slower than a 330d, but I'd miss the essentials like MS+, pro nav, hud, acc and interior comfort pack more! |

If you need to stay under £40k I'd get M140/M240i and make the wife and kids walk.

Surely Tim, the whole point is keeping the 6-pot... You can just about spec a 330d M-sport with ProNav and HK for under the magic number I reckon. I would be willing to sacrifice other bits like ACC and HUD.

Absolutely if the engine means more to you than the options then that's the way to go for you then. I like my gadgets and fancy bits though.

I like my gadgets too - I'm a compete gadget whore tbh. I'm not actually going to buy a 330d as I think I'm going to wait a couple of years until the G20 is out and available used. I completely overspec'd my current car and hardly use any of the stuff, so am really not going to do that again! (Probably!)

Luckily I'm not in the situation to have to choose, but I wouldn't completely rule out my next car being a highly specced 20d |

I can't understand why people find it hard to work out.
Additionally, it's sort of weird man maths trying to get out of a few hundred quid for a £40,000 car. Just spec the car you want with the kit you want within budget. I would not really want to get a £38,000 car, just to save a few hundred quid, I think would always regret it and the car would not really click or be that wanted. |
