MOT Test Tyre Advisory

Hi there,

I wonder if someone could give me some advise please, or point me in the right direction?

I had an MOT carried out last month and I got an advisory on both front tyres of :-

Front Outer Tyre worn close to the legal limit edges on both (4.1.E.1)

The car has done 31K miles and the tester said they are worn dangerously close to the canvas on both tyres. I asked if this might be balance and or tracking and he said he did not think so but had seen it on other BMW's

What are your opinions please guys - maybe I should have a hunter alignment?

Thanks
Andrew

My car was starting to be similar on the MOT last May - plenty of tread depth on the rest of the tyre, but the outer shoulder a bit worn - nothing near as bad as yours though, they are really worn out.
My advisory was just put as 'Nearside front tyre low on edges', and 'offside front tyre low on edges'. Mileage was 31k, tyres were original
I had an alignment carried out when the replacement tyres were fitted a few days later, and it was all perfectly fine.

Then it's not surprising they're worn out, mine last little over half that!

Yes I am not moaning about how long they have lasted really but how the wear on the outer edges is so sever when compared to the rest of the tyre?

I will probably get a hunter alignment done in any case I think and maybe change the fronts to non run flat ?

Thanks

Andrew

Have you been running your tyres at a too low pressure. Runflat edge weight loading could do this.

To be honest I do not check the pressures very often but the last time I checked them (3 months ago) they were ok

Thanks

Actually I was thinking of the rears! Fronts do last around 30k.

It is not unusual to see edge / shoulder wear on runflat tyres. This is simply because of the sidewall stiffness. Although from personal experience Bridgestone tyres do tend to be a little worse than others. If the tyre was doing this prematurely then I would suspect under inflation but 31k isn't too unreasonable to change the fronts.

If sticking to runflats quite a lot of people of here seem to recommend Goodyear Eagle F1s.

Whilst 31k is ok mileage it's the least I'd expect from a set of fronts on your car, so looking at the wear pattern then something isn't quite right, whether that's the tracking or the pressures.

I'm just about to change out my original set of Potenza's which have done 34k on my 335dx. Rears are now down to 2.8mm when I checked at the weekend, fronts showing 3.1mm

Now the sun seems to be here, I'm making the move to a set on non RF MPSS I picked up a couple of months ago.....can't wait

If your tyres are lasting 31k miles then you are clearly not driving hard enough....

Just looking at Pirelli run flats - probably not going to go that way now but I replaced the 2 rear tyres last month and paid £130 each via Blackcircles.

The same tyres now £208 each - that seems a flippin big increase in 3 weeks !!

Weak Pound as an excuse maybe?

Fair enough. Worth getting the front tracking checked and adjusted if necessary. Full Hunter 3D alignment not necessary just to fix the front toe angle but if you do they can compensate for any thrust angle that cannot be dialled out at the rear.
