new steering rack and rod - stiff/heavy steering

ive had my steering rack and rod changed and reprogrammed by bmw post accident 7 weeks ago..the steering is now v stiff and im having to tug the steeringwheel to get some movement from the wheels, is this normal on a new steering rack? or is there a possible issue with pump pressure or something else? would appreciate thoughts..its back with bodyshop/bmw at the moment and i can foresee being fobbed off so would be good to be armed if needed..thoughts appreciated

Definitely not normal with a new steering rack. I'd say they've not calibrated it properly.

cheers teaston, so you dont think its something else at play here? like the pump? ive read the new rack may require more pressure with the old pump isnt able to.produce..justs something i read on the tinterweb not sure how much truth in it

It is electric power steering so no pump. Perhaps the motor isn't getting any power or wasn't coded properly to provide assist at low speeds.

As bimmer says it's electric not hydraulic.

What if you put in sport mode, did it get even heavier?

yes even heavier in sport mode, it was as though turning the steering did very little and i had to steer alot to get the car to turn and that too with heavy steering..
