M2 Order

Hello - I ordered and put down a deposit on a AW M2 on 12/21/16. I was just told by the dealer that it would go into production on 4/15. I asked for a production number and my client advisor said I wouldn't get a production number until it went into production. Is this true? It seems like other people on the board have received a number long before it went into production.

Thanks!

Production number is available when BMW schedules production of the car. If you dealer has an allocation and BMW has excepted their order and scheduled production for 4/15 then there is a production number now for that car and a dealer and name assigned to the production number.

Thanks. I have emailed the dealer to see what they say. They told me in December that I would have the car in three months. There have a few things they have said to make me think their not being 100% honest (or don't know what their doing).

I put down my deposit on December 22nd.

My dealer gave me my production number on 3/14.

My car went into production on 3/29 and is scheduled to be completed on the 11th.

If there really isn't a production number yet, I'd be concerned about that 4/15 date.

Once you have that number you can bypass your dealer and either track it by calling up the BMW genius guys or registering at BMWUSA.com, entering that number and tracking it there. It seems the genius guys are a touch more current, and sometimes the tracking on the website gives me an error.

Hope it's really due on the 15th and your dealer is just screwed up about the prod number.

I got my production number on December 31st, when I ordered the car. If they are telling you they have an 'allocation' then there should be a production number associated with that allocation. If they do not have a production number, in my experience at least, it means they don't yet have an allocation, and don't actually know when you will have a car.

If they have an actual allocation they would have a production number, the production date comes later but the production number should be available. Many dealers have overpromised timelines for cars that they did not have an allocation for. That is why when you are speaking with them you have to determine exactly what you are putting your deposit down for, a spot on a list or an actual allocation. If they didn't have an allocation they could not possibly give you a legitimate production estimate.

Exactly this. The first dealer I put down a deposit at kept promising they had an allocation. After the fact I learned about allocations and production numbers are tied together, meaning I didn't actually have an allocation since I had no production number. I called him on his B.S. and he still swore it was an actual allocation and that the production number would be coming any day . Thankfully was able to find a car elsewhere.

OP the only number that you cannot get until the car goes into production is the VIN, they will not release that until its actually engraved into the chassis on the assembly line.

Here's the email response I received from the dealer -

It doesn't have a production because it has not started the production process yet. It says it will start on April 15th roughly. Trust me when I say as soon as it has a production number I will send it to you. I check daily.

I'm skeptical

Ask your dealer for a "Vehicle Inquiry" form. It should contain production number and your order configuration. Seems very sketchy for him to claim no production number at this stage I think.

Yeah. Dealer sounds at a minimum incompetent, and at worst untruthful.

I placed my order on 1/21/17, received the production # on the spot, and the car went into production in week 7. Just picked up the car last weekend

Here's the response from the dealer -

"As for the vehicle inquiry, that will be available when the production number is available. Apparently I can't pull one because I need the VIN number. The VIN number has not been assigned yet due to production is supposed to be starting on the 14th. As soon as it is available I will be sending it to you."

I called BMW NA on Monday and they said that didn't sound right and that they would call the dealer. Haven't heard anything back from the dealer.

Still seems like they are playing games with you. You can get a production number way before you get your VIN. You get a VIN when the car enters production or shortly afterward.
