Talk some sense into me
I'm a '16 340 owner - have had the car for about a year, and I love it. This is my first bimmer, but it won't be the last. I'm currently considering making a move that might be dumb, and would appreciate opinions. My 340 is optioned as follows:
xdrive, m sport, track handling, cold weather, MPPSK, driver assist, driver assist + What I'm considering doing is trading in for a ~2 year old low mileage M3 or M4, financed for roughly the same monthly payment I have now. I have never driven an M car, and honestly I'm afraid to because I know I'll love it. I get that this is a personal decision 100%, but what would you do? |

Do it! As long as you get some winters too. Chicago has some bad snow sometimes.

Side note, how much torque does that BMW M Thermo Mug add to your car? I'm thinking about getting one but I'm afraid of blowing my motor.

I wouldn't worry about insurance as much as the trade in, but if he's upgrading to an M I'd be more worried about the maintenance costs in the long run than how much I lose on the trade. In other words, if the amount lost on the trade is an issue I wouldn't do it.

A lot of people saying do it.
I have a similarly equipped 340. I assume you got xDrive for a reason. Consider that and the trade off (if you can think of it that way?) for the RWD M car. |

Test drive then decide. I test drove the 2017 M4 and decided a used 435i with Dinan upgrades to equal M power was better for my preference / lifestyle. The way powered is delivered / modulated and the steering feel were more to my preference in the 435i with Dinan tweaks (amung other things). So test drive and decide for yourself what works best for you.

Yup. xDrive was for Chicago, but I'm ditching that town and heading south.

Make sure to do a cars and coffee style burnout when you leave work everyday . As for no CPO, no worries you can get mechanical breakdown insurance or throw caution to the wind, this is an enthusiast car so have fun.

Generally speaking, getting rid of a loaded car you just bought a year ago is a bad financial decision. Don't get suckered in by the equal payments, that's money illusion, it's how they want you look at it. Same payment for an older car with higher maintenance costs and insurance, no CPO, and possibly taking a whack on trade-in/resale on your current car is certainly a negative NPV transaction overall. If you can afford it and it's worth it to you, that's your call. Honestly I'd feel better about it if you were selling and getting into a new M3, that would indicate maybe your financial situation had improved, new job, lower expenses, something like that. Level payment swap into an older car feels like squeezing.
Oh, and your 340i w/MPPSK sounds better than an F80! |

I say fuck it sell the 340 and get the m550i xdrive so you're covered all seasons. It only cost $75k so about the same as an m3. Nobody drives a bimmer cuz it makes good financial sense lol.

While it is a poor financial decision, if you can afford it, then life is too short to not do things you want to do. If it was me, I would wait a few years then maybe get a slightly newer F80. The 340 you have as packaged ain't no slouch!
I plan to move on from my F30 328i in the next 3 years and maybe get into an M3 or a newer 340. |
