Rang around three dealerships today for prices, two of which refused to let me supply my own oil, anyone else encountered this?

Also anyone know the implications of going to an independent whilst on a pcp?

Using an indi is absolutely fine, I believe there are laws citing that it must be permitted else dealerships could monopolise the market and charge stupidly high prices. The only downside is they may not be able to update it on the idrive, some may though.

Just use the price matching dealers offer. Not sure if it's BMW wide, but I know Stratstone and Coopers will price match any written quote.

Audi did it everywhere, I got a local specialist to quote me for servicing, being up front about what I was doing, with the promise of taking it to him for brake replacement for example. For my 3 Audi services I paid, £165, £225 and £180, about 60% less than I was quoted.

They always looked pissed off when I got my quote out as I dropped my car off, but they always matched it.

I've been told this too, little p155ed off with my dealer - My 235i needs a service (1st service) in the next few weeks as it is 2 years old.... my brand new 440i is due in 3 weeks and they are not even willing to talk about a bit of discount off the service price.

For info this is Sandal BMW in Huddersfield 0 I won't be giving them business again.

When I looked into this the saving was about £45 so hardly worth the effort of buying it yourself. It makes you look cheap too - buy a £40k car & try to save £45 on oil -wtf ?

I prefer to have my car serviced at a BMW Dealer to save any warranty hassles at a later date. Why risk it all by going to an indi ?

Yes. You've said that multiple times.

Now, no idea what the law is in the USA, but over here, whilst you can go to an independent garage and get the work done, and still maintain warranty, if you do it yourself (so don't have a receipt from a professional garage) then your warranty is void.

Learning a little bit before shooting your gob off is usually a good idea.

Me too, but as I understand it, you can use any garage, as long as they vat reg etc and genuine parts are used, properly receipted etc and it won't invalidate you warranty.

That is correct. The garage must itemise, in full detail, all the work carried out. Technically, if there was a problem further down the line, BMW could insist on having the invoices showing that 'approved' oil filters and the like were supplied and used.

What you miss out on though :

1. TSBs. In 2013 or so, BMW realised they'd put too large a grommet in a hole, and it was preventing drainage, and could lead to problems. Not a safety issue, so not a VOSA recall, so they issued a TSB to the dealer network, telling them to replace said grommet when the car was in for a service.
2. Software updates.
3. (and this is the biggie) Goodwill, if, once the warranty expires, you have something go wrong.

I don't get this either, seems like the dealers are just being bloody awkward as I can't see what difference it makes other than the obvious dent their profit margin. I've read on here of other members being permitted to supply their own oil.

I'd prefer it done at a dealers myself but I don't believe the warrant is affected if you retain evidence that an Indy used approved parts and the same oil.

Do some actually change it?
How do you know it has been changed?
My local dealers want £260 for oil and filter WTF ... a total rip off IMHO
I get indy to do it with BMW parts and save £100 easy
Any warranty claims ill see BMW in court!

It is where they recover some of the new car sales discounts.

I suppose you take your own wine to your favourite restaurant...

It posted twice because the site was slow and it went into draft mode then somehow it got posted on their multiple times. What oil are you supplying them, is it OEM or your own brand? Wouldn't you want to use BMW approved oil to maintain coverage? If you changed your own oil, how would they know just curious why you want them to use your oil? There are folks who change oil themselves here in the states and it's not going to void the warranty to use an indie shop. No need to be offended about me "shooting off my gob" just trying to be helpful. Maybe I should have phrased it as a question instead. Here in the states the oil changes are free as it is in many places so buying your own oil wouldn't make much sense.

I have a friend who worked in a Service main dealership and I heard a few stories. I don't trust them.

My first service is due at the end of the year and I was planning on getting most or all of it done by an independent BMW specialist. Why get ripped off at the dealers if you don't have too?

The price matching looks interesting though.

And on the making you look cheap thing. It could be that they think you are a mug for paying such high prices.
