Oil change coming up on 15k miles

I have a '13 Activehybrid 3. Bought the car at 30k miles and according to the service records, I'll be at one year since my last oil change but only about 14.5k miles in, so not quite 15k miles. My CBS states that I have over 3k miles to go until my "next scheduled oil change". Thought I had read somewhere that BMW used to do one oil change a year once you hit either 15k miles or one year. Called the BMW near me and the SA said to just follow the CBS but they've been questionable on their knowledge on BMW's guidelines before. Does anyone know what the revised rule is on this?

Yes they will do a "low mileage oil change" at one year and not reset the service indicator. Also the service interval for BMWs now is 10k miles. Is 2013 not included in this?

15,000 miles its way overdue for an oil change if you want to be the longterm owner...I dont care what that supposed BMW counter says.
10,000 is the max for me and even then I'd change the filters at least in between.
The fact they shortened it form 15,000 to 10,000 shows bmw corporate doesnt know what its doing.. and supposedly its tranny oil is lifetime.. BS

They should reset it. The interval is the (vehicle specific) mileage or one year. whichever comes first. My first oil change was at 4900 miles, the second at 8700 miles, one and two years after purchase.

The miles to go is a guesstimate. If it hits the year mark first that will supersede the mileage.

it's disturbing then that when i brought it in last month to get the right bumper camera replaced, they didn't even mention an oil change

so re-reading this: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=868291

seems to state that since mine was produced May 2013, it falls under the 24month/15,000 mile oil change system. is that correct? i'm just not sure if this is an "official" guideline that was later redacted or something?

Yes that's correct as far as I know. If I were you I would just pay for another oil change. What's $120 for piece of mind and a healthy car?

There might be a different calculation/interval for the AH if it can run on pure electric some of the time. E.g. If you've done 5,000 miles on pure electric then you've only logged 9.5k miles on the engine out of 14.5k total. And they might be "easy" miles if the AH works like other hybrids and uses electric-only for the short low-speed trips. I have no clue how the AH works though, just speculating.

Anyway, starting with the F30 they do reset the service indicator for the 12 month low-mileage oil change.

I'm not aware of there ever being a 24 month interval. The longest they've ever stated was 18 months, but that didn't last long until they backed it back down to 12 months.

2013 and 2014 F30 are 24-month/15k-mile OCI.

My car is 2013 too, and the OCI is 24 month/15000 miles. In addition there is an annual low-mileage oil change@12 months.

So my car had 6 oil changes within 4-yr/50k-mile maintenance:

12 months/9k
14 months/12k
26 months/22k
32 month/25k
44 months/35k
46 months/38k

My CBS OCI is around 14-15 months, 13k miles.

Since out of warranty my car gets half interval oil change, say, 7-8 months/6-7k miles.

I've never used it, still being under the service plan. But while trying to book my latest appointment on line the site thought I was booking for paid service. I was quoted $182 for an oil change, and $72 for a set of wipers. I can't believe anyone would pay those prices, but I guess some must, not knowing any better.

Honestly it's just more convenient to pay the extra bit of money to have the dealer do an oil change. I don't have to worry about waste plus having the dealer take care of it establishes a solid record for resale value.

That's actually a good point, I often go on "pure" battery power when going driving through my neighborhood to and from work and in cities so that would make sense that SOME of my miles is "battery" miles, although I don't think it's more then maybe a couple thousand or so. But if the CBS takes that into account, I can see why it's saying to change it at a bit over 15k miles.

Anyways, I was able to contact another dealer and they said to bring it on in since I'm at the one year mark so I'll be able to get this old oil out of it. Also plan on doing a Blackstone test to see how bad or good the oil is at 15k miles.

Glad you found a dealer to change your oil. If it's not covered under free maintenance you can also get it done at an Indy for a bit less (my Indy charges about $100-$120 for our X5).

Post your oil analysis when you get it, I'd be curious to see the results. The analysis on my own break-in oil is posted in the thread "interim oil change" that was active last week.
