Nasty scratch what are my options

Well it was bound to happen sometime I guess. I have no clue how it happened. I just saw it while washing the car today.

Any ideas on the best way to deal with this type of scratch? I would rather pay someone to touch it up if it goes that route. Thanks.

IMO...that would be shop work. Looks like it's right down to the metal. Bummer.

I have never really had a scratch like this. Would you take it to the dealer and ask for an opinion or place they recommend? Also, are you thinking a respray would be the fix they would want to do?

I don't think it is down quite to the metal I believe the basecoat on these cars is black.

All good questions. I would guess a full re-spray might be required although I've had similar work done to a front bumper and they only touched it up. Couldn't tell where the scratch was.

As for visiting the dealer...Probably more expensive would be my guess. I knew of a great local guy in my area. Wait a day or two as I'm sure someone from your area will chime in and even be able to recommend a shop for you.

That's the bumper guys. There's no metal in the bumper. You can probably get that sanded, sprayed and blended for a couple hundred bucks. Personally, I'd just get some touch up and fill it in myself. It wouldn't be noticeable unless you were really looking for it.

to make a perfect repair are there businesses that can just work the area with a technique to get a smooth and perfectly blended paint or does a bodyshop need to do a more traditional repair like fill and sand then respray the whole bumper.

Yikes indeed. Get it done right. You will note any half way repair for as long as you own the car. Go out a bit less this next month, and put the money into the repair. You will be glad you did.

My pro touch up guy could fix that easily. He did one for me that was down to bare metal. Estoril is hard to blend and my guy said he would not recommend it when I showed him the one on my Estoril.

Go to Cavallo then - they're 20-30% more but do excellent work. Main Line Porsche, Maserati, Algar etc use them.

Bingo for B58togo...no rust issues here...the front and rear fascias are indeed plastic. As he said, try a steady hand at touch-up, and if not satisfied, that area from the wheel well opening rear to the corner could be sanded, and blended back to an OE appearance. No need to do the entire rear fascia.

Actually the bigger the scratch the easier to fill in some ways, but any good detail guy could do it. I would fill it with a few coats of touch up primer, give that a week between coats (to shrink and cure) and take to a detail guy for finish. It will be noticeable if you are right on top of it, but I could make that invisible from 24" for a pro, and pretty much non-existent to 95 percent of the world from under 12" staring right at it.

Your car is painted in waterborne base, and metallic from the factory. This, and pearl are nightmares to match. This would require blending to look right. You would have to paint your bumper, and blend both rear quarter panels and horizontal portion of the trunk. Plus the clear has to go over all of the blend panels, you clear the bumper, qp, sail panels, full trunk and roof. Even just the bumper requires a few hours of prep to pull off car, remove diffuser fill and sand, seal coat, base coat and clear as well as reassemble.

The reason you need to blend is the metallics lay different out of almost every gun and booth conditions. You would need to clear all of that to not have a clear blend, which is a recipe for clearcoat separation in a few years. Blending is hard, we would only let guys with 5 plus years exp. in a production spray environment before we would let them blend as redos are expensive.

You could find someone to do this for a few hundred bucks, I can assure you it is not done right, the materials alone are a $100-$150 for a high end paint, clear and sealer for a shop.

Basically just get it touched up, save your coin for when the car bumper is truly out of commission. DD will get plenty more.

For a small scratch like this, on plastic, I'd just buy a touch-up paint and do it myself. Here's why:

That was great and there is totally something to that. I think this one only hurt so much cause it was the first and no idea how it happened. It is almost a year old now but also the first time I have bought a new car to experience that first one.

At the end of the day I daily drive this car, and it is a great car to get to daily drive. I will probably check around and see what I can get for a person who knows what they are doing to touch up. I won't respray, I feel there is some risk incurred with that with the metallic blue and really...it isn't that big of a blemish to warrant respraying a significant section of the car to blend. Plan on owning this car for awhile I am sure there will be some other scars.

It would be cooler to know this came during a sweet autocross run though.

Get DR Color Chip and touch it up yourself. It won't be perfect, but hard to see. Keep the remainder for any stone chips on your hood.

My touch up guy is great. He recommends air brushing if he cant do touch up. Easier to match existing body color and the area is much smaller. Most pros can take care of this simple ding.
