F30 328i scratch on rear bumper

Hi All,

I would like to have some advice on a car scratch I noticed on the rear bumper a couple of days ago. A photo has been attached.

When I first saw it on an overcast day I thought it is a bit of bird poop. So I got my spray wax out, spray a little on it and tried to lightly break it up with my fingers. But nothing happened. When I took a closer look I found out someone had actually scratched the right side of the rear bumper, then tried to cover it up by putting either liquid paper(white out) or white paint on it. Needless to say I felt gutted.

The longer of the 2 touched up area is about 5cm long. The problem is I'm not sure what was used to cover the scratch. Any advice on what I should use to rub off the touched up area would be much appreciated.

I do have some BMW alpine white touch up paint and clear coat and would like to have a go at patching it up myself. If I'm satisfied with the result then that would save a few hundred dollars by not going to a detailer.

Thanks
Felix

Sorry, I'm a newbie. But before wet sanding it as billfitz has suggested, should I try to use anything stronger first to see if it can be rubbed off?

No this isn't a mild defect. It's probably through to the plastic and shows black. To make it look right it needs sanding, polishing and painting by a professional. If you want to get off cheaper, you can do it yourself but the paint is going to look led than optimal. Depends what your expectations are. Do you know how and have the equipment to sand and polish?

I don't have an orbital sander, I intend to wetsand by hand.
Haven't wetsand before but have watched a few YouTube videos on how it's done.

Don't think it's liquid paper. I tried using mineral turpentine and a microfiber to rub on the painted on area with no success.

I brought mine in to the BMW for it's free maintenance and got a nice scratch that's even worse than yours. Trying to get the car totaled. Not sure I'm going to succeed.

My advice to you is to stop and not mess with it any more. Take it to a detailer that specializes in touch up repairs. It won't look perfect and you need to temper your expectations. If nothing short of perfect is what you expect, get it repainted.
