B58 Map 1 Operating Temps

So just did a 20-25 minute trip on map 1 with the JB4 app (Thanks Mike @ x-ph for my BT adapter). I was curious what normal operating temps were for the B58 and couldn't find anything so wanted to post my results and see if anyone else has their own input and numbers to add.

5 minute warmup = 130F
1-2 minutes of driving = 160-165F
10 minutes = 185F
15 minutes = 226F (never went above this temp)

I was in Comfort mode/map 1 the whole time, outside temp is 35F, and IAT stayed between 45-50F while driving, ~60F when idle

Trans temps were:
5 minute warmup =75F
1-2 minutes of driving = 95F
10 minutes = 108F
15 minutes 120F
25 minutes = 140F

I've been running an OBDLink MX and can tell you in comfort mode engine oil temp sits at 226F most of the time. Coolant usually runs 225-232F. This on a stock engine set-up.

Not sure why but the JB4 app when I select "water" it constantly reads 0F. I was assuming it didn't have a coolant gauge to read.

Matches what I've been seeing with Torque app.

It probably doesn't support it. When researching OBD2 apps it seems some didn't support oil temp, but did provide coolant temp. Also, depended on model and year as well.

Figured JB4 would have supported them all. It's the b58 version. Only gives oil and trans temp

Dont have JB4, on my stock i see the same temps as you listed -
5 minute warmup = 130F
1-2 minutes of driving = 160-165F
10 minutes = 185F
15 minutes = 226F (never went above this temp)

N54 is the 335 engine and some did and some didnt come with the oil cooler. I was fortunate enough to have the stock oil cooler and temperature was always between 210 and 250f. The N54 was running hot !

I still do not get how after sitting for 12 hours in 33 degree weather - immediately on startup the coolant is reported @ 47degrees in Torque.

The B58 motor is designed to retain heat so it can run more efficiently. When a motor is cold, it doesn't get the best mpg/performance and it also pollutes more. That's why they went this route with the B series engines.

I switched the gauges on the JB4 app this morning to check these temps.
On sport / map 3 I was also seeing oil around 226F, but my trans temp was about 228F. Would temps be different for a manual?
ambient temp ~58F

Possibly. I was only driving for about 20-25 minutes total and trans temp hit 140ish. It was also like 35 outside

While that may be so - I was out of town from from Fri-Monday and when I got in the car (5am on Monday morning)- ambient air was 33F - the Torque app still registered 43F - That's after a weekend of not being driven and below freezing night time temps, day time temps were not into the 40's.

I also understand the thermodynamics of why the motor @ operating temp is more efficient, I just don't understand why Torque is reporting temps consistently higher.
