Set gains - crossovers on or off?

(Status: Max unclipped head unit volume already set, all eq off)
I'm referring to crossovers on the amp here rather than any headunit crossovers - which i dont have anyway on the hifi head unit.

Most guides say crossovers off before setting amp gains. But then the say, for example, 17.3vac youve just measured and set on your amp outputs, decreases in voltage when you then turn on the crossover and re-measure without adjusting anything else. That 17.3 vac now becomes, for example, 7v when re-measured. Even when playing a test tone that is supposed to be in the middle band between crossover points. Eg a 1khz tone for highs with a hp set down at 200hz.

So isnt it better to set gains with crossovers on, so that you are ending up with you're 17.3vac calculated voltage output rather than the 7vac you end up with by setting crossovets AFTER gains? A 10v drop is a massive decrease in ultimate power/wattage to the speakers...

you may want to take a little more care and ask your question a little more coherently.

I would imagine most people do there set up by ear.
If you read the JL audio procedure the say set the gain
with a 1khz tone then they also say to recheck it after eq.
If you really wanted optimum I think you would want an
O scope.
I don't know that any of this would gain you a more pleasing
sound than if you did it by ear.

I used this method: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-akvyC5f...fier-gain.html

You can find test tones on Spotify
