Aftermarket Wheel Spec Help

Hey guys!

Looking into getting aftermarket wheels for a winter setup on our F48. What 19" wheel spec should we go for in order to push the wheel edge out so it's flush without spacers? Hoping to mount 235 or 245 width tires all-around. Ideally, would want wheels to be as concave as possible.

Also, we typically get mostly rain during the winter in Vancouver, Canada (ie. only 2-3 weeks of snow at most, and 6-8weeks of slick/icy roads). Are there any real cons to going with a wider tire? How 'bout with a lower profile tire when it comes to snow (eg.18" vs 19" wheels)?

Thx!

Fred

I am not sure how about Canada, but I think globally 225 is the max width set by BMW you can put on X1.
And I really wouldn't bother with 235 or wider for winter, and alsou would go with 18" max, I personally I am planning to buy 17" for winter.

I have 20inch wheels on mine...... spoken to loads of so called specialists on the phone and they don't know sh!t....!.....one said I could fit a 10 inch wide rim with a ET 20 on the car.....even though I stressed that it's not a E84 model.....idiot

It's all about the offsets bud...... keep the RR the same or no more than 2-3% max otherwise your speedo and gearing will be off.......
A good site to use is
Www.willtheyfit.com

If the wheel size and offset you select stick out more the 2cm on front or rear more than the originals .... your in trouble mine sit perfectly flush which is what I wanted.....thankfully my calculations and gamble paid off.

And be carful not to go too big a profile , as there is a ridge on the rear inner arch lining that will rubb if you get too close

I run 255/35/20 on mine..... I think it looks badass

20x9 ET 40 all round..... they fit perfectly..... if I went with either a wider wheel or lower offset I would have needed fender flares

those wheels remind me of the Neuspeed RSe12

I like yours all except the machined aluminum outer rim. I'd prefer full black.

Thx for the replies, guys. Appreciate it.

Looks great, Ed_rx7!

So what ideal spec should I look for in terms of width and offset if I want absolute "flush" fitment (no poke) and 235 tires all around in a 19" rim?

Thx!

I would say 8.5 inch all round 35 offset

or 8 inch all round with 30 offset

Thanks!

Firs time checking out willtheyfit.com... am I understanding it correctly that a 235/45-19 tire (on a 8.5x19 ET35 rim) will be "better" than a 235/40-19 in terms of minimizing odometer and diameter deviations? And the "poke" will be about 18mm from factory fitment (in essence, like having an 18mm spacer on the wheel)?

btw, http://www.wheel-size.com/size/bmw/x1/2016/ says my factory size is 225/45-19 (rims are 8x19 ET47).

I'm starting to do some research into wider wheels for my X1 and thought to revive this great thread!

I’m looking for aggressive wheels, wide and, if possible, deep concave setup (but without needing any fender work). Sounds like around a 9” wide wheel with offset 40 would be flush and not risk rubbing etc.

So I’m aiming towards 19x9 ET40 wheel specs with 245/40 tire specs. Outer rim would poke out 19.7mm towards fender and inner rim 5.7mm towards suspension. Less than 6mm closer to the strut should be no problem there, and I know my wheels can easily poke out 20mm from stock based on my 15mm spacers.

The problem is that I don’t see 19x9 with bolt pattern 5x112. I haven’t checked too many sites but it seems like I’m limited to either 19x8.5 or 20x9. Any thoughts?

Also, any recommendations on deep concave wheels if I went with 19x8.5 instead?

Thanks!

VMR wheels are known for being pretty concave.
Model 701 comes in 19x8.5 ET35 which is pretty much the same fit as 19x9 ET40 on the outer edge

thanks! looks like the 708 also has a 19x8.5 with bolt pattern 5x112 ...

looking at maximum concavity wheels that can fit safely, preferably 5 straight spoke design.

Would 20x9 5x112 ET35 rims with a 5mm spacer work? If possible, I'm considering GMP Italia ATOM 20x9 ET35 or GMP DEA 20x8.5. ET35.

Would 21x9 ET35 be too big?

If you have an opportunity to purchase wheels with the correct offset, it's preferable compared to using spacers. I have spacers on my M3 and you have to be careful to use anti-seize (so you can remove them later) and to keep the surface clean (so there is no vibration). Not only that, but you typically cannot use the lugs with a lock, because you need longer lugs (even with 5 mm). Also, a 5 mm spacer results in less contact between the wheel and the hub, which is not as good for ensuring the wheel is centered on the hub.
