Is it better to have fewer larger beads, or more but smaller beads? Is the bead size somehow indicative of the quality of the protective film?

Not at all... beading means nothing as far as protection goes. Smaller, rounder beads just indicate high surface tension. The hydrophobic effect which is a result of high surface tension makes it easier to clean the car and dry the car, but some products do not bead water as well as others.

Also, water beads are cool to look at
