Does the iPhone adapter allow for the use of music or is it purely for charging?

I used it for playing music and spotify via the USB in the armrest.

You must have USB in the armrest

Connects the Apple iPod or iPhone to your BMW. Cable adapter for connection to the USB socket, enables all music titles saved on the iPod/iPhone to be played, operation via iDrive Controller, multifunction steering wheel or radio. Title search by artist, album, playlist or genre on the on-board monitor or radio display. Automatic charging of iPod/iPhone during use.

Absolutely nothing. I use the supplied lead from Apple and works as described. Charges the phone too.

Doesn't do anything the original apple cable does.

Its 0.3m so is a neater solution rather than having loads of white cable everywhere and it looks and feels great quality.

I had it working on a E90 LCI with a combox USB in the armrest

I thought the Y-Cable went from lightning on the phone to USB/3.5mm in the car? iPhone 7 not having a 3.5mm port would make no difference? Or have I got it wrong?

You got it wrong mate - its like lightning and headphone jack one side and USB the other - hence Y cable.

No headphone socket = no music for me via HU control - i use the new apple connector to jack dongle to aux in my car.
