Where did I go wrong?

Hi

Carbon black, stone chip near the filler cap. Chipped lacquer exposing the colour coat.

I filled the chip with lacquer using a toothpick type implement and then used 2500 grit very lightly to level it off. Finally i used polish and buffed it up.

The repair is completely smooth and I'm pleased with it except it looks *exactly* the same as before. Albeit you can't feel the chip.

Should I have mixed colour with the lacquer?

Thanks
Mike

Yeah should have put color on that. Even then it might still be noticeable. The light goes down into the chip and doesn't reflect off the metallics the same. The best is to fill the chip with a lacquer putty and when almost level add color and clear. You can probably dab a little color now and then clear/sand/buff. Just be careful not to sand through the adjacent paint.

Thanks.

So do you reckons that's primer, or the Base coat but just looks different because of the light etc?

That's primer. But even if you'd put color on it before clear it wouldn't have looked right(most likely).

Metallics are actually quite complicated in their behavior.

Thanks again

It actually looks OK or at least better than it did in normal light so I may leave it for now. Plenty of other chips to repair so I'll include colour next time !
