Road Salt / carpet

I have a couple of stubborn stains from the road salt on the winter I just can't seem to get out. I have tried vinegar and water and used a steamer. No dice.

Any thoughts ???

These stains are 6+ months old?

What was your exact process with your steamer, and which steamer do you have?

In my experiences, steam is very capable of removing salt build up from carpets, but it does not happen instantly. There is still a fair amount of scrubbing and time required to let the steam penetrate the mess and break up the stains, and you need to use a powerful tool for the best results. Most inexpensive, consumer based tools will take a very long time to break up heavy build up, but powerful professional grade steamers can cut through it much quicker.

A large selection of steam cleaners, including the tools seen in this video can be found here

The vinegar (1:1) solution should also help, but again this is not a quick process. You must let the solution sit on the stains and saturate the area well enough so that it can really go to work. You'll then have to scrub a fair amount with a stiff carpet brush to break up the salt. Then wipe with a damp clean towel, or use a steamer at this point to really get in there and clean it up.
