Pumping Gas: Automatic Fuel pump issue

Ive noticed a few times that when I pump gas in California and I use the auto lock so you can walk away, the pump tends to stop, and I have to reset it, sometimes like 5-10 times.

I am not sure how the mechanism works where it knows when to stop pumping fuel, so u don't top off etc.

any one else experience this?

Its the vapor recovery system. You need to make sure the cover goes into the ring to make a complete seal or else it stops.

There have been various threads about this with many different solutions. What works for me is to rotate the fuel nozzle 90 degrees clockwise from the normal fill position. Of course you can't walk away, but it won't automatically click off until it is completely full.

This happens to me at some stations and it makes me cringe when they flip it upside down and I watch it slowly fall onto the fuel door.

You should never walk away when pumping gas. Auto shutoff often fails.

I believe everyone here is correct.. It's a basic vapor recovery issue.

A twist, inverted or slow start of delivery will usually take care of the issue..

When I fill in states with a "assisted pump jockey", like Jersey, Oregon, etc, they can usually show you a thing or two as they have seen it all.

Long gone are the days of crank it wide open, walk away and gun a couple butts while you listen to the "click click", of the pump..

You must be pretty old to remember those days.

Move to NJ or Oregon. Problem solved. Well, not solved, but delegated. And these pump jockeys are never anywhere to be seen when the pump clicks off. Why are we not pumping our own? Safety!

I have experienced this same problem in most of the western US , I have had it in 2 different dealers and even complained to BMW and I got "NUTHIN" most have mastered that Deer in the Headlights look. Meanwhile as I stand there holding the nozzle upside down trickling the gas in and watch people walk by and smile with that knowing look that says "And You Payed How Much For That".

Old issue. Simply twist the gas nozzle clockwise or counter-clockwise and you should be good. On my car, rotating the gas nozzle about 45 degrees CCW works great. The only draw back is that you must stand there and hold the nozzle in that position.

I turn mine about 20 degrees counter-clockwise and it works fine every time. No need to stand near it or hold it. Just a simple, short twist and it's fine.

I remember the day he impaled himself on his steering wheel driving that 550 at a high rate of speed. He was a cool dude and actor but died too soon.

As a general rule here is what I discovered:

If I'm standing 1 foot away from the nozzle it will operate with no issues and won't prematurely shut off.

If I'm standing more than 1 foot away the nozzle will shut off the moment I'm out of earshot or am back in the car.

The fix is simple... it's called the gangster hold. Just hold the pump like a gangster holds a gun... sideways! LoL

Didn't know the Hawthorne effect affects gas pumps too lol.
