Weird coincidence or other?

Car: 2007 335i converitble 140k miles.

The problem: Getting a errors 5DF0 and 5DF1...all ABS and brake traction control lights on.

Background: The car would not start one lovely evening (literally 5 minutes after I just closed on the sale of my back-up car ). I thought it was the battery so I replaced it with a battery from Autozone. Still the car would not start. So, it turned out the starter went out. I had a guy work on it in my garage who got it halfway through it, left, and did not come back to finish. So, I towed it to a local indy shop to finish.

I get the car back from the garage after they finished the starter replacement and I immediately have the ABS and traction control lights come on.

I take it back to the indy shop and he says it's producing the aforementioned codes, which indicate it needs a new ABS hydraulic pump unit.

It seems unlikely to me that both the starter and ABS hydraulic pump unit go out within the same mile. Normally I'd pin it on the installer of the starter and say figure it out but in this case I've had two different people working on it, so I can't really place blame.

Reading through some threads I see some people mention the below possibilities mentioned for the codes. Is there anything else it could be, maybe a wiring that is disconnected during a starter removal or something? Any other ideas?

Bad ABS hydralic pump- replace with rebuilt or used ~$300.
Loose battery cable- check
Insufficient battery- Test
Steering Wheel Angle sensor- not sure how to test???
Thanks!

Have you had the alternator checked for voltage output?
