BMW Advanced Battery Charging System

Does anyone use the BMW Advanced Battery Charging System (part # 82 11 0 026 663)? I used this charger (with cigarette lighter adapter) on my E46 M3 and never had a problem with the power connection. However, on my E92 M3, when I plug it into the cigarette lighter, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. It seems that when I turn the car off by pressing in the clutch and hitting the Start/Stop button, the car shuts down as well as the power to the cigarette lighter. However, if I turn the car off using only the Start/Stop button and hit it two or three times, the power to the cigarette lighter stays on. Has anyone else had this experience?

Here is the info about the BMW Advanced Battery Charging System # 82 11 0 026 663:

If you park your car for any extended period of time you need this little unit to keep the battery charged. Plug it in and you're all set! 1.25 Amp battery charger designed to fully charge and maintain a battery at a proper storage voltage without the damaging effects caused by trickle chargers. The new BTP micro-chip technology applies the correct peak charge, then automatically maintains the battery at the perfect float voltage which virtually eliminates battery destroying sulfation! Temperature compensation ensures optimal charge voltage even in extreme weather conditions. Powder coated aluminum chassis. Spark Proof! Reverse polarity protection ensures safety. Built in 72 hour timer will protect a marginal battery from over charging.

I used this charger also in my E46 M3 without any issues, but as in your situation it doesn't work with my MKV GTI. My theory is that most probably the lighter jack is controlled by the ECU -thru a relay/switch/module that completely shuts it down and separates it from other circuits for protection- and it is not a direct connection to the battery as in the E46 M3.

In your case I would assume that it is the same issue.

You could be right. The parts guy at my dealership said the clutch has some kind of switch on it that disables power to the vehicle, including the cigarette lighter. I'm guessing that if I shut the car down using only the Start/Stop button, power to the lighter will remain.

Looks like a Battery Tender Plus with BMW's name on it... Just get the following and use the included quick-disconnect cable to hardwire it to your battery - lighter problem solved!

MFR link: http://batterytender.com/product_inf...a9659e15f81bcc

Amazon link (good price, free ship): http://www.amazon.com/Deltran-SuperS...6654708&sr=8-1

I use this on my Z06 and have had no issues...

Right, I think it is a Battery Tender rebranded for BMW. Thanks for the links, but I'd like to keep the charger I have. The power to the cig lighter definitely has something to do with the clutch and Start/Stop button. If I turn the car off using the Start/Stop button, and not the clutch, power to the cig lighter stays on.

BMW OEM Battery Tender on E92 with comfort access - anyone have luck with the plug-in

Need to bring this up again. So both my local BMW and parts and service gurus say the BMW Advanced Battery Charging System (part # 82 11 0 026 663) will definitely work with the plug-in adapter to the cigarette lighter on my 09 E92. Well after trying it tonight, nothing but the damn blinking red light. I don't find power to the lighter, wiggling the adapter NG. Is the jury out on this, or can you really only use the ones with the alligator clips to the battery or the other hookups I've seen on this site. If the one with the plug to the lighter is NG, why the hell do the fools at BMW sell this type? The pushing of the start/stop button etc. does not work for me. Anyone have success with this plug-in charger on this model BMW or is this E92 really designed to be cold to the lighter with the power off?

The IBS (Intelligent Battery System) in the e9x applications will prevent this type of charger from being used. You'll need to go directly to the terminals on the battery itself or underneath the hood.

Battery Tender

What a pain in the ass. Why would I want to leave the trunk lid open or the hood or jury rig the damn thing? Another BMW electronic screwup.

I Bought an Adaptor

I bought a socket to aligator clips adaptor cable a few years ago so that I could use the BMW charger that I bought for my E46 on other cars that I had. I think I got it at Radio Shack, but I may have found it online. It works fine. I've been using it to connect to the jumper connection points under the hood. The charger works as expected this way.

It simply does not work with the 12V jack in the cabin.

My solution was to install a direct 12V OEM socket in the trunk:

Best solution yet! To those using the terminals in the engine bay, I read that that is not recomended and you should use the terminals on the battery itself.

why not?

that connection in the engine bay is good enough to jumpstart the car so why cant it take a battery tender?

Are you sure? The M3 Owner's Manual states on page 214 (Charging the battery) "Only charge the battery in the vehicle via the terminals in the engine compartment with the engine off. Connections, refer to Jump starting on page 217."

Yep. But even if it wasn't, after a few minutes of inactivity, the IBS shuts power completely, so that socket would be useless for a charger anyway.

Same thing buddy. Am debating if I should hardwire a BT pigtail to this car. I'd have to add extra cable as it's a long stretch, and cable would be fugly coming from the terminals under the hood. I usually attach the pigtail with the cap's 'tail' around one of the hood grile slats, and it's nearly invisible. But all my other cars have the battery in front, and installation is practically invisible with the hood open. For now will keep opening the hood every time. Good thing is I don't use the car much. Take care.

Very resourceful. So, I am to assume that this works with the BMW BT?

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

I found it. Tom at EAS mentioned it in another thread. He is a pretty damn reliable source IMO, maybe we can have him chime in?

I actually just tested this yesterday, the underhood battery terminals were not affected by IBS and did not cut off.

The interior cigarette lighter is a different story, going the route Technic did with the auxiliary 12V socket is not a bad idea.

But you have to open the trunk, so why bother with all that installation if you can just open the hood instead . I'd like a pigtail somewhere so I don't have to open neither .

Isn't this "BMW Advanced Charging System" just a relabeled "battery tender plus" brand battery tender.

Sorry for the large resolution pic, i copied the image link from the manufacturer.

I would bet that BMW would charge more than what the street price on the battery tender plus is going for?
