Short-term lease / rental

Planning a trip to EU late next year & pondering our options to rent or lease a car for 5-6weeks so seeking some feedback on our options... Ideally I'd love to sick with what we like (ie BMW) but I'm aware that there are some Peugot & similar options available.

Will be travelling with family of 4 so would prefer a touring or probably X5. We both have dual Aussie / EU citizenship, but not EU residing.
Intend on travelling through Germany, Holland, Maybe down through Switzerland, France & finish up in Rome or similar. Will also likely side trip through Estonia & Finland but would likely have to rent a car for these two given the distance of the side trip.

Can anyone give us some ideas on limitations of travel with a vehicle between countries, what lease rates are typical & what options I might have here? Plans are pretty flexible at the moment, just trying to work out our options - leasing seems to be significantly cheaper than Renting & I've heard some car companies rent out newer vehicles to reduce VAT payable for local sales?
