Considering an M240i to replace the 335D. Any insights appreciated!
In the next couple of months I will need to start looking at the F30s replacement.
The 335D has been perfect as a fast all-rounder, but it doesn't provide much in the way of edge-of-the-seat thrills. As such, I'm steering the missus down the road of getting a decent diesel, meaning I can get something a bit more interesting. I'd love some insights from those that have driven or even owned an M235i; especially if you also have experience with the 335D. It's a shame the F30 looks so much better than the F22 (IMO), but I'm excited to get in another RWD turbo petrol.

I've had an M235i and was pretty underwhelmed by it by all accounts. Needed to be worked to get anything out of it.
I then had the 435d which was much better as a day to day, very quick off the mark but lacked engagement. I've now got a 440i which ticks all the boxes that the 235i and 435d didn't. With the M240i around now, I would think it would be a great car (although I've not driven one) EDIT; Just to say, if you drive an M235i after your 335d - you will be disappointed.

I enjoyed my M235i immensely. Fantastic little car.
Keep the spec, real, challenge whether you really need anything. Keep it light, keep it cheaper. Profit and enjoy! Definitely do it, can't say any less than this. From my M4, M235i and 335d of most recent times this is the only one I will have regretted moving on from.

I had an M235i for just over a year and did 14000 miles in mine. I loved the car in all but the ride. which was a bit jittery. I had a BMW performance exhaust fitted. which made the thing sound really good. A nice quality sound. Not at all chavy.
I would say. try one for a couple of days. This time of year with the windows down. it should be help your decision.

I'm looking at a 240i next year.
What I would expect from it is to feel more compact and nimble than an F30 so as to be a nicer drive down a twisty B road. If the difference is not that great then I will look elsewhere. |

I have had mine for 16 months now and love it to bits, but I appreciate that it won't suit everyone Rukka included. If you value comfort on the same level as performance and handling get a 330/340i? Back problems? it may not be for you. Do keep it basic, don't bother with adaptive. Does it suit you? I remember one post saying that it was not easy to get his child out of the rear car seat .... come on! On the + side the engine is sublime, acceleration is more than you need, gearbox is sweet and it has nicely finished interior/seating. I test drove M135i's and the M235i and I would suggest that you do the same and consider what your needs are. I have resisted putting yet another image up.....
sorry, couldn't hold it back |

Thanks for the input so far!
Regarding comfort, I have been a bit spoiled by the F30, but it's not an absolute necessity. I definitely lean towards performance over comfort, having owned some very impractical cars in my past. Regarding keeping the spec lightweight, this won't be a problem, although I know with the M235i that speccing the diff was highly recommended. Does anyone know if this still applies with the newer M240i? 340i is also a consideration if the numbers work out similar.

I'm in a 225D at the mo' and it's certainly easier to thread down a B-road than an F30. Very wieldy little thing. If I didn't need an estate next vehicle I might be after a 240i myself. I do think adaptive is worthwhile if you value comfort. Save some money and stick with 18s. They look and feel much better.

if I didn't need the space I would have had an m240i, but right now the 340i is perfect I'm not too much of a fan of the stock m lite wheels. think I would be very tempted into a set of 405m's if I was ordering.

Any excuse for this bad boy.....
Has anyone on Bimmerpost not seen a picture if this car? I think I've shoe-horned it into any EB2, 2 series or 6MT discussion

I still miss mine. I really don't think they need an LSD. I borrowed TRL's manual M235i with a diff and really didn't see what all the fuss was about. maybe if you track it. I spent my money on the exhaust.

Wow, impressive work from the little BM! Is it on standard suspension in that photo? The 19s fit quite nicely.
