My 440i - **1200 Mile Update**

Well it's been 2 weeks now since collecting the lovely EBII 440i from the dealers and I've covered a lowly 500 miles but I've just got to say......

What a fcuking car!

It addresses all the issues I've had with previous models/variants;

It goes exactly where you point it with what I consider to be sharp and connected steering. The suspension is really better behaved than it should be for an M Sport and soaks up pot holes with ease.

You can drive it around town using just the creamy low down torque, of which there is plenty,

You get a big rush, shove in the back and slight trace of rear wheel slip as the revs climb (very quickly) in the mid range,

It sounds awesome when driving into the car park at work with the exhaust burbling and crackling,

Is howls like a banshee when revving upwards of 5000rpm,

To top it off - my first full tank of fuel returned 31.8 mpg (brim to brim) with mixed driving including my normal commute to work.

This car really is the definition of having your cake and eating it

.

Excellent, buddy. You basically sold the car to me. I also got a deal from bluebell crewe. David Thomson is the sales executive, cant wait for it to come now.

Are you going to add any m performance bits.

Glad all my waffling and rantings helped

I'm undecided on the exterior at the minute as I'm thinking "less is more" but then I do like the look of the MP rear spoiler and the more I see just the front splitter cups (rather than full splitter) - I like the idea.
I won't be going for the full MP hit though....

Interior I will probably go for the full MP Carbon & Alcantera dash and gear lever/surround at some point.

Glad to hear you got sorted at Blue Bell - they seem to be a good bunch although I will be having my servicing etc done at HJ in Warrington as it's nearer to me and they have always been good in the past.

I really don't need to read posts like this.

Sounds like you have made an excellent choice.

Brilliant! and stunning car.

I did the gearbox reset thing the other day and it has made a noticeable difference in comfort. Obviously up to now only 3k in the gearbox has learnt my style but that included running in so not ideal.

Comfort is more "sporty" now which is good but you don't get all the pops and crackles as in sport even with the flap always open.

I still have yet to find what else sport does over the left exhaust flap to make it pop more?

Another 500 miles and I'll start opening it up a bit more

I'm thinking they really have hit a home run on these x40i models. Pretty good economy for the performance, excellent price and by the sounds of it a sweet all round package.

At 8k a year the difference in fuel costs is around £200 a year but I wouldn't think the diesel would really benefit at such a low annual mileage.

If you were doing 20k a year then the difference is still only £550 a year.

All depends on how you drive it of course

My fuelly record follows a fairly mixed set of driving: http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/340i/2...sabrush/391459

I was getting 35mpg on a similarly specced 330d that probably wasn't driven as hard

Unless you want or need X-Drive there's no dilemma as at that sort of annual mileage the diesel's not worth a second look; 440i all the way (unless of course your budget will stretch to an M4!).

Fuel light came on at 362 and I got 55 litres in when it was showing 386. The range said it had 17 miles left but with 5 litres still in it (60 litre tank) there is obviously a bit of wriggle room

Sheeesh, some low figures there, I would have expected an average of atleast 25mpg or is that being optimistic ? question was to OP

Impressive figures during the breaking in phase, definitely keen to see what your getting in the next couple of months, no doubt you'll put her into Sport at some stage purely just for some fun, but beware Sport Mode is addictive

I get between 300 and 350 and easily more on a long run at constant speeds. it's about £62 to fill. this is for a 340i, not sure if the 4 has a different tank size

this car will easily do 25 mpg in mixed driving - your looking at high 20's to low 30's with normal driving I.e not being scared to use the throttle where appropriate, you could get mid 30's grannying it. Inner city driving would see mid 20's.

in sport it's louder in the cabin (asd maybe) but there is lots more burbles, pops, bangs and cackles on the overrun I think there's more to sport mode than flaps

MPG all depends on how you drive it. If you drive like a granny then I would think upper 30's would be achievable.

If you spend all day on an empty motorway @ 70 mph - then 40+ is achievable.

But for either of the above scenarios - go get a 4 pot diesel

My driving is a mix of motorway, stop start town driving and just what I would class as normal running around. I don't hoon it everywhere or treat the accelerator as an on/off switch.

I will however explore the upper rev range occasionally

If you do drive this engine hard IE fast acceleration all the time , do lots of short runs and general lunacy - then I would expect it to achieve low 20's mpg (or maybe lower)

But then again, that's no different to any other engine/car.

If you want to be really boring and set the active cruise to 60 mph - then it will do this........
