Gardening with key in pocket + car in garage
Here is a public safety announcement:
Now, I thought the Germans were pretty clever and it would be impossible to open the boot when very close to a brick wall (use the rear sensors)...well clucking hell I disproved that! Gardening today and had the key in my pocket, bent down and obviously pressed the boot release...I thought, hmm that was a weird noise, went into the garage and found the boot was wedged against the wall !! Not a happy bunny, got a very grazed boot edge and one very large chip and lots of little chips which I had mad a complete balls up trying to touch up. |

Count to ten then call chips away. Or look at some of the you tube clips on how to touch up.
I've been there once with a c class. I caught the button as the garage door was closing and could only stand and watch as it gouged a deep denty scratch into the bootlid. |

Couple of coats of paint, couple of coats of lacquer, wet sand with P2000 then P3000 wet & dry paper, polish with decent compound and a machine polisher, you won't be able to see them!

Question is, will you now learn your lesson and take the keys out of your pocket for future garden activities?
Also if my mrs told me to do the Gardening, she would of got ignored. |

I did the same thing but only left a very small mark.
I called Chips Away who sent a mobile guy and he said it would be difficult job. They said they would have to respray the boot lid and remove the badge which they said they were uncomfortable doing for such a small mark.

Surprised the boot lid managed to hit the wall as it opens within the sweep of the bumper.
Only reason I know this is I did something similar when I parked too close to the glass windows at work and thankfully missed any contact. |

Even since my mum bought a new Astra 35 ish years ago and scraped the hatch by opening against the garage door within days, I learnt a valuable lesson - add foam to any part of the garage which the car could touch. This includes range of places where doors could open, boot could open, and where the bumper could touch.
As I change cars over the years, I just add more foam (pipe insulation in my case) to our garage as the car doors open in different places. It is now beginning to resemble a padded cell, but at least I'm stress-free about scratching the car. |

Thanks for the replies.
Re my signature I have a F31 hearse. I already have garage wall protection for the doors but didn't even think about the boot...will add that now! Also looking for decent gardeners...:-) Still annoyed with myself :-( |

I haven't got a garage to damage the car on but have lost count of the number of times I've come back to find the boot wide open or had someone fetch me for it.
Hope you get it sorted. |

Aaahhh the old pocket boot opening trick. I know it so well. Now I have the M Sport Key Fob protector thingy and although it's bulky as fook at least my boot now stays shut when it's supposed to!

This is a good idea - just ordered one of those. I too have inadvertently opened the car boot when tying up laces on my walking boots (in the house), and it is a bit worrying, as it could have been open all night if I hadn't noticed...

I never use my garage, too full of junk/toys. And, a bit too tight for comfort for modern cars. However, I did wind up with a very wet boot floor, just above all the computers, after sitting on my key while it was doing the Cumbrian rain thing... Key case is your best way of avoiding future grief.

If its any consolation I've managed to open my GC bootlid accidentally from my pocket whilst at the same time opening my garage door and got the 2 jammed against each other!
Thought I would have completely f**ked my bootlid as was jammed solid and took 10 mins to release, but thankfully not one slight scratch....no idea how?!

You guys all need to stop wearing tight leather pants! Not had this happen I don't think to me with all sorts of key fobs. Agree this F30 version has the button the most exposed.
