Using iDrive to read txt messages!
After playing with the iDrive voice commands I came across this little nugget. Sorry to the people who already know about this but I thought some of you may find it useful!
With your phone paired, Android in my case, press and hold the voice activation key on the steering wheel which will then connect you to your external device (phone). From there you can issue voice commands such as play music, start navigation etc. but the one I like is to read back a new txt message. So if a new message comes in while driving you can press the button and say “read text message” your phone will then tell you who it’s from and would you like to listen to the message. After listening it then gives the option to respond or not, quite impressive and this is all via the iDrive system. So now I don’t even have to pull over to get my messages! |

My phone has Cortana. So lets me know when I have a text and if I want to listen, reply or ignore.

On Android you should be able to get full office functionality with EBT. I only get texts on my iPhone... On cars with pro media a long press of the voice button will allow you to access the voice control feature of your phone. On my MY14 car with the standard iDrive and EBT this doesn't work. I can only get texts read out by the office function of the car. However, on my wife's MY15 Mini with no-navigation it works... Siri reads out texts for her for free!

I have it as part of EBT...one thing I've never been able to do though is successfully respond to a text message via voice (using my work android phone) - when I say the message and then send, nothing happens.

On my iPhone, I use Office to read the texts (or have the car read them to me) on the iDrive - then long press the steering wheel button and get Siri to respond for me.
I often have my work Windows phone paired at the same time and with that, I can read messages too in Office and just get Cortana to respond It's all pretty easy really....

Mines sept 2014 build and doesn't have EBT but this works for reading and sending messages. If you have Apple Music you can also ask it to play any song you desire through the Bluetooth streaming.
