need helmet help

I signed up for my first autocross on may 7
I was planning on borrowing the helmet on-site ... but the registration page says helmets are all sold out
So I may need to buy a helmet before this coming sat

Any suggestions for a local store around LA? So I can go and try on helmets before buying
Or are there some brands/models that are the go-to ones?
I am probably going to get a closed face because I do want to move onto track events as well and don't want to buy another helmet for it

You wanna definitely try them on as fit is very important and each manufacturer is different. Focus on fit on crown of your head especially if you can adjust/replace cheekpads for final fit.

No idea about shops in the LA area though.

Try to aim for a Snell M2015 compatible helmet.

my friend has the same helmet and i tried it on for size

for the price, it's hard to find something better (in terms of safety rating and looks)

motorcycle helmet
by the time i am participating in events that require a SA2010 or SA2015 certified motorsport helmet (and do not allow motorcycle helmets)
i will be in need of a new helmet anyway

or i already died because my helmet was not the right one

For AX you should be fine, but some orgs dont allow M helmets for HPDE, some will look the other way. They aren't interchangeable. The two biggest factors is that they are designed for different types of impacts and that a motorsport helmet has a fire resistant lining.

I think the most important thing is getting something that's either Snell M2010 or M2015 compliant.

Did you mean SA2010 SA2015?

Yes. Sorry. Typo in haste.

I got a cheaper helmet initially that was compliant. Once you get more experienced it might be worthwhile to invest in a better helmet. Plus, you could give your GF your older helmet (as long as it fits okay) so she can get into AutoX and HPDEs.

Snell compliance goes without saying why would you buy a non-compliant helmet?

In order to have the SA compliance it will have the appropriate impact and fire rating. I brought this up because most people don't consider the problem of having the lining of your helmet on fire when they think "ohh I'll just use my M helmet".

Fire is a real hazard, less of one, usually in an unmodded car but at HDPE events you often are provided rides in your instructor's cars which are often pretty heavily modded. A cage slows down egress considerably for instance.

Food for thought
