That pulley is actually not smooth. the one below is.

also look to see if the belt or parts of did not get dragged in at the crank shaft seal.

check your power steering pulley for damage. alot of the time this is caused by that pulley contacting the subframe, shredding the belt immediately or over time as the jagged edge tears into the belt. as mentioned above, there's a chance that the shredded belt can tear the front crank seal off the block, resulting in belt pieces in your oiling system. bad news.

If it did contact the subframe how do I prevent that from happening again?

aside from swapping out your front subframe with the updated part from BMW, the general consensus is upgrading to the 335is motor mounts can help prevent this. I upgraded both mounts to the 335is part and haven't had any issues up to this point. It's been a little over a year since I replaced them, so far so good.

both pulleys on the tensioner are smooth, so yes the ribbed side of the belt will loop around the smooth upper pulley.

That usually means that a pulley is wobbling, or the bearings are bad in the idlers (wobbling).

Had a similar issue with the supercharger on my truck when the pulley came loose.

My belt shreeded as well with the updated front subframe the cause of mine was a siezed alternator clutch pulley

the shop in that video obviously know nothing about n54 belt failure because it probably almost never is caused by the belt itself

From the short amount of time I had to look this up. the xi cars might not have this issue due to a different subframe.
