e90 Water Pump Failure?

Recently when doing my regular drive, I got a yellow high temp light, followed by a red high temp light within a minute. I pulled over and shut the car down and noticed the fan was running full speed. I waited about 15minutes for the car to cool down a bit, so I could limp my way home (Less than a mile).

When I turned the car back on, The fan turned off and I had no temp warning lights. The rest of my drive was perfectly fine.

I waited to let the car cool down to check coolant and I am pretty close to the minimum mark. I then decided to test the pump as i've seen. Turn car on, but not engine. Turn heat to max and fan speed to lowest.

The pump sounds like this.

Note* THIS VIDEO IS NOT MINE.

My pump sounds very similar to this, but it does pump still. Now it pumps normally and then seems like it slows down to a stop, and starts back up and repeats. Is this apart of the normal cycle? or is that the pump failing?

Also is that actually the sound of the pump failing? I have no idea of what it should sound like.

Any help is appreciated.

The statistics tell us that your waterpump is failing because it has failed in this same way for so many other 335 owners. The failing pump is not always a mechanical failure. It has often been a failure of the waterpump control board.

Mine failed intermittently at first as well. The sounds I heard were the radiator fans running all the time due to the waterpump not circulating water.

Overheating is a telltale sign it's failing. Get it replaced before it really strands you.

Based on the title of your post, "e90 Water Pump Failure?" I can tell you the answer is yes.

Without even reading the post.

Hard to disagree with this statement since so many of us have experienced the same exact thing as our pumps failed. When mine failed I got the same sequence of errors, car ran fine the rest of the day, 24 hours later the pump was toast. Better to replace it now (along with your tstat) while you can, instead of getting stranded somewhere and really being in a bind.

When mine failed, there were no warning lights...

...but I heard a loud whirring noise and opened my window to discover it was coming from under my hood (almost sounded like someone was running a lawn mower aside of my car). I came on here for advice and everyone said to get it replaced, and they were correct.

That car had nearly 120,000 miles on it when the pump failed, so I was a lucky one. Others said there's lasted 50,000 or so.

Yeah I'd consider 120k a pretty good run with the original part. Mine went twice - once at 55k which the dealer covered and again at 90k, I replaced that one myself. While it sucks, it's not too bad of a DIY so I don't really mind it. Since I track the car a bit, I don't mind servicing the cooling system more often anyway to try to ensure things don't blow up while i'm out there.
